Captain America: The Winter Soldier (2014)

Once Captain America was brought into the 21st century, his action scenes were given a major upgrade. Captain America: The Winter Soldier is a much more hard-hitting and intense action movie with this chase being a good example of that.

After the Winter Soldier targets Nick Fury, Steve Rogers takes off after him. Using his shield, Rogers smashes his way through an empty office space, charging through doors and bouncing off walls. It is a spectacularly fun look at a super-powered foot chase.

Narc (2002)

2002

The gritty crime drama Narc isn't very well-known, yet it contains one of the most intense foot chases in cinema history. The movie wastes no time getting started as the very first scene has an undercover detective chasing down a dangerous suspect.

Anyone who suffers from motion sickness should sit this scene out as the camera shakily follows the policeman, capturing the frantic nature of the chase. It all leads to a brutal and chilling end.

The Matrix (1999)

In The Matrix, the freed humans can only escape the simulated world by being pulled out through a telephone call. After facing off with Agent Smith, Neo realizes he cannot beat his machine enemy in this world and flees to find an escape.

As he is being directed by his allies to the nearby phone, the agents hunt him down. To make matters more dangerous, the agents have the ability to take over the body of anyone in the Matrix, which means Neo faces a new threat around every corner.

Ferris Bueller's Day Off (1986)

Ferris breaks the fourth wall in Ferris Bueller's Day Off

Most foot chases are found in action movies and thrillers, but Ferris Bueller's Day Off is one of the rare movies that prove they can be just as fun in comedies as well. The classic comedy is about the titular high schooler who fakes an illness to skip school.

After fulfilling his perfect day out on the town, Ferris has to make a frantic run home before his parents arrive and find out he was lying. Watching Ferris run through the neighborhood backyards is hilarious and surprisingly suspenseful.

Baby Driver (2017)

Ansel Elgort in Baby Driver

Given that Edgar Wright's Baby Driver is about a getaway driver, it's no surprise that there are some incredible car chases in the movie. However, Wright switches it up with one amazing foot chase sequence.

Following a heist gone wrong, Baby takes off as he is chased by an endless army of cops who pursue him through a mall, a park, and a parking lot. As with all of the action sequences in the movie, it is perfectly synced up with music, making it so much fun to watch.

Insomnia (2002)

christopher nolan

One of Christopher Nolan's most underrated films is the thriller Insomnia. Al Pacino stars as a Los Angeles detective who comes to a small Alaskan town to investigate a murder. After cornering the killer, Pacino's cop pursues him in a chase.

The chase takes an inventive turn as the killer attempts to evade the cop by fleeing across a lake of lumber logs. It adds an extra bit of danger as any wrong step could mean certain death. This all makes for a tense sequence which Nolan pulls off wonderfully.

Raising Arizona (1987)

Hi running from the cops in Raising Arizona

The Coen brothers are known for switching seamlessly between dark thrillers and hilarious comedies. Raising Arizona is one of their funniest features and includes one of their best action sequences. It revolves around H.I. McDunnough, who returns to his life of crime when he steals from a convenience store.

The Coens basically turn the sequence into a Looney Tunes cartoon as H.I. runs away from the gun-wielding store clerk, the police, and a pack of neighborhood dogs. It is all scored by a perfect bluegrass tune that makes it all the more entertaining.

Point Break (1991)

Some have dismissed Point Break as that silly movie about the bank-robbing surfers, but it is actually a really stellar '90s action flick. In the film's most impressive sequence, FBI agent Johnny Utah chases down the masked bank robber he now knows is his friend Bodhi.

The scene begins with a car chase before transitioning into a frantic foot chase that is astonishing to watch. The camera somehow manages to keep up as it follows the two men through narrow alleyways and people's homes. There is even a moment when Bodhi throws an angry dog at Utah.

Casino Royale (2006)

Daniel Craig

The world was waiting to see how Daniel Craig would be as James Bond in Casino Royale. With this extended action sequence early in the film, Craig proved he was the perfect Bond for a new generation. While doing surveillance on a bomb maker, the target makes a run for it and Bond pursues.

Bond's target is played by parkour artist Sebastien Foucan, who shows off his incredible skills during the chase. Craig, on the other hand, shows that his Bond is a much dirtier version of the 007 character as he bulldozes over everything in his way.

Mission: Impossible – Fallout (2018)

Ethan Hunt jumps between rooftops in Mission: Impossible - Fallout

No actor is better known for his skills of running on camera than Tom Cruise. It seems like he fits an intense running sequence into all of his movies, especially in the Mission: Impossible franchise. But he outdid himself in the latest entry in the series.

After the villainous Walker escapes from the IMF team, Ethan Hunt pursues him through the streets of London. The chase involves Hunt accidentally interrupting a funeral, running through an office in the midst of a workday, and jumping out of the window. To make the sequence even more thrilling, it includes a shot in which Cruise really broke his ankle doing a stunt.
