Fans of the James Bond franchise were recently hit with the sad news of the death of Kenneth Tsang. who played North Kora's General Moon in Die Another Day. While Tsang's character was good-hearted, the movie was populated with baddies, the most notable ones being Colonel Tan-Sun Moon and his henchman Zao.

But how good is Zao compared to the rest of the Bond henchmen? Most of the enforcers in the franchise are shown to be quite formidable because they do most of the dirty work as their bosses do most of the talking and scheming. Even though they are all awe-inspiring. only a few left a lasting legacy according to Reddit.

Red Grant - From Russia With Love (1963)

James Bond watches as Red Grant points a gun at him in From Russia with Love.

After the death of Dr. No, Red Grant is summoned by SPECTRE No. 3. Rosa Klebb, and tasked with assassinating Bond. About him, StarryEyedDog says "he completely out-spied Bond!"

Most henchmen are depicted as brutes, but Grant is way more than that. He is not only as smart as Bond but he is also patient, shadowing the British agent for a while before pouncing. The Redditor's claim about Grant out-spying on Bond is correct too, because he first uses Agent 007 to make sure the valuable Soviet Lektor finds its way to SPECTRE before attacking him. He later proves himself as a challenging fighter by giving Bond the duel of his life aboard the Orient Express.

Nick Nack - The Man With The Golden Gun (1974)

Nick Nack serves as the manservant and enforcer for world-famous assassin Francisco Scaramanga. HotdogMachine420 notes, "he’s extremely memorable, and has a very unique, compelling relationship with Scaramanga".

Because of his stature, Nick Nack is underestimated by many who meet him, but he is wise, ambitious, and deadly. And he isn't just content with being a subordinate. As the movie progresses. he makes plans to topple the master, something that points to his courage because his master is one of the most brutal men on Earth. Furthermore, he'll always be remembered because he doesn't get killed. Instead, he suffers the most humiliating defeat when Bond traps him in a suitcase.

Fiona Volpe - Thunderball (1965)

Fiona Volpe using a shotgun in Thunderball

Redditor grandmofftalkin roots for Fiona from Thunderball, declaring, "she’s the best thing about the movie." The first-ever Bond henchwoman is tasked with spying on NATO pilot Major François Derval by SPECTRE.

A quintessential femme fatale, there is no one Fiona won't kill. She is shown to be a better driver than Bond too, something the MI6 agent acknowledges. And she has plenty of cool toys as well, including a BSA Lightning A65L motorcycle equipped with a missile launcher. Volpe comes close to killing Bond by making him believe she has truly fallen for him.

Mr. Hinx - Spectre (2015)

Dave Bautista as Mr Hinx in James Bond

Ok-Average-6466 loves the henchman as well as the actor who portrays him, writing, "Dave Bautista was so good that I wish he was Blofeld." In the movie, Hinx begins hunting Bond when he infiltrates a meeting chaired by Blofeld at the Palazzo Cadenza in Rome.

There's waiting to be hired and then there's grabbing a position. Hinx literally employs himself by gouging out the eyes of his colleague, Guerra, and takes his seat. But that's not the only badass thing about him. Hinx owns one of the costliest cars in the James Bond franchise—the Jaguar C-X75. He also comes really close to defeating the protagonist. On the train, he is a few seconds away from killing Bond before Madeleine saves the day.

May Day - A View To Kill (1985)

May Day lifts a man in A View To KIll

May Day serves as the bodyguard of the industrialist and former KGB agent, Max Zorin. Maviarab uses a few words to describe her: "She's just scary period."

The Bond franchise has recently tried to keep things as realistic as possible, but before the Broccoli's avoided the sci-fi route, there was May Day. She is genetically engineered by Nazi eugenicist Dr. Hans Glaub and as such, any opponent can forget about taking her down. Zorin does the right thing by making her the head of his all-female security team because she is extremely competent. Among her most gruesome acts is defenestrating an investor who feels Zorin is too dirty to work with as well as murdering a stubborn lawman with a poisoned stage prop.

Oddjob - Goldfinger (1964)

Oddjob carries his boss Goldfinger's bag in Goldfinger.

Redditor hrabkin sees no other choice, arguing it's "pretty hard not to go with Oddjob." In the movie, Oddjob works for the ruthless bullion dealer, Auric Goldfinger.

Oddjob's razor-rimmed hat adds to his cool factor, but it's not just a fashion accessory. Many are slain using it. The henchman is also one of the most skilled fighters in the James Bond franchise too. In fact, no other enforcer frustrates Bond as much as Oddjob. His statue proves to be very beneficial when he engages in fisticuffs with Bond in the final stages of the movie. As he dodges attacks with ease, Agent 007 becomes so frustrated that he resorts to throwing bricks at him. And had he not resorted to electrocution, Bond would definitely have been defeated.

Jaws - The Spy Who Loved Me (1977)

Jaws grabs James Bond from behind in The Spy Who Loved Me

DontShootTheFood is a big fan of Jaws, saying "he's straight out of a horror film." The character works for industrialist Karl Stromberg as an assassin.

Jaws is undoubtedly the most visually striking henchman. That's thanks to his razor-sharp, shark-like metallic teeth which can bite through anything. He, therefore, doesn't need to carry weapons around. Apart from having teeth that he uses to even bite an actual shark, Jaws has a high level of endurance. He survives a car crash as well as several attempts to kill them. In the end, Bond is forced to rig the game by electrocuting his teeth.

Dario - Licence To Kill (1989)

Benicio Del Toro as Dario wearing black in License to Kill

Dario serves as the right-hand man for the drug dealer, Franz Sanchez. Redditor sirguywhosmiles confesses "I am not a fan of Licence To Kill but Benecio del Toro's character has to be up there,"

Dario is so brutal that he is reported to have been kicked out of the Nicaraguan Contras where his methods were seen as too inhumane. In the movie, he is responsible for one of the saddest James Bond movie deaths, that of Felix's wife. And he tops that by cutting out the heart of a man that had been sleeping with Sanchez's mistress.

Baron Samedi - Live And Let Die (1973)

Baron Samedi prepares to fight Bond in Live and Let Die

According to kapcar77, there's no better candidate for the best Bond henchman than "the man who cannot die." Samedi serves Mr. Big, the Harlem drug lord, and ruler of the Caribbean island of San Monique.

A henchman that paints his face white and practices voodoo is definitely one to be feared. He is iconic because he is the only supernatural baddie to ever appear in a Bond movie. Samedi can also sit proudly knowing he is the only person who Bond never defeats. Agent 007 throws him into a coffin full of venomous stakes, only for him to appear again at the end of the movie, laughing hysterically.

Xenia Onatopp - GoldenEye (1995)

Onatopp seduces James Bond

Redditor baudilerairean says "Famke Janssen as Xenia Onatopp was a franchise highlight." The Janus crime syndicate assassin is known to seduce targets before killing them.

Onatopps' unusual murder techniques are what make her unique, as she derives satisfaction from strangling men with her thighs. Moreover, she deserves to be lauded for almost turning Bond into one of her victims. Luckily, the MI6 agent is saved by Natalya.
