CONTENT WARNING: Major spoilers for Red Notice are discussed in this article.

Netflix's latest and most expensive film yet, Red Notice depicts an epic hunt for the lost golden eggs of Queen Cleopatra. In the hunt for the eggs, Agent John Hartley (Dwayne Johnson) and expert con Nolan Booth (Ryan Reynolds) attempt to foil the world's most wanted art thief, known only as the Bishop (Gal Gadot).

In this globe-trotting adventure, plenty of jokes and quips are exchanged between the three principal cast members, who almost seem more adept at gaining the upper hand verbally than in the actual treasure hunt.

Browser History

Bishop: "I Want You To Remember One Critically Important Thing: I Know Everyone You Work With And Every Member of Your Family. And I Also Know Your Browser History."

Gal Gadot as The Bishop in Red Notice

Gal Gadot's The Bishop is the extremely intelligent and constantly scheming art thief that keeps Johnson's Hartley and Reynolds's Booth on their toes for the entirety of the film. No matter how much planning they put into beating her at her own game, she always remains one step ahead of everyone in the room.

Bishop's talents for hacking and blackmailing come in handy when she seeks to send an untraceable message to Interpol using a London analyst's personal computer. As she leaves the man tied up in his office, she threatens him by revealing she knows the dirty secrets on his Internet search history.

Hairnet

Booth: "Why are you wearing a hairnet? You're bald."

Ryan Reynolds in Red Notice

One of the best attributes of Red Notice is the film's humor concerning the fame of its principal actors. With such a star-studded cast, audiences have come to expect certain things from the characters they play. The film leans heavily into those typecast, put still pokes fun at them all the same.

Nolan Booth, in the fashion of every Ryan Reynolds film, is a sarcastic and emotionally inaccessible man who is filled-to-brimming with derogatory comments about those around him. At one point, while planning his and Hartley's escape from the Russian prison while working in the kitchen, he points out the uselessness of Hartley's hairnet, shattering the cop's tough-guy persona with one line.

A Statement Piece

Booth: "Somewhere There's A Very Nude Cow Whispering 'Worth It.'"

Dwayne Johnson aiming a gun in Red Notice

There is no denying that the costume designer had a ball working on this film. From Gal Gadot's stunning red dress at the masquerade in Valencia to Reynolds's and Johnson's various over-the-top suits and disguises, the stars of Red Notice are certainly thieving in style.

One particular fashion choice stands out quite a bit at the beginning of the film, as John Hartley enters an art museum wearing a pristine leather jacket. Upon meeting him in this getup, Booth can't help but offer a few quips concerning the jacket and the cowhide that went into crafting it.

A Good Work Ethic

Bishop: "You Can Have Excuses Or Results, Not Both."

Gal Gadot in Red Notice

While the majority of Gal Gadot's best film roles involve her fighting for the side of good, she clearly enjoys playing as the conniving villain of Red Notice. There is no doubting that her character is a professional above all else, a trait that keeps her at the top of the game.

Bishop has a stalwart philosophy about her line of work: no excuses, only results. It is this creed that ensures that she always comes out on top over competitors like Booth, as well as one step ahead of any law enforcement agents that may have delusions of putting her behind bars.

The Wall

Booth: "You're Like A Well-Dressed Wall!"

Ryan Reynolds with his hands up at gunpoint in Red Notice

Nolan Booth spends much of the film messing with Agent Hartley, often calling him out for his size and cliche "cop character." Even in the heat of the heist, Booth can't resist but contrive new situations in which he can pull out yet another quip at the big man's expense.

When Booth and Hartley are in the midst of breaking into an art vault in Valencia, Booth (perhaps purposely) crashes into Hartley while carrying the glass containing a very important fingerprint, shattering it to pieces. His ensuing joke about Hartley's rock-solid build seems far too premeditated for the incident to have been accidental.

Marriage of Convenience

Hartley: "We're Not Partners. This Is A Marriage of Convenience."

Booth: "I Want A Divorce, And I'm Keeping the Kids."

Booth and Hartley in the Nazi bunker Red Notice

The majority of the film is spent exploring the relationship between Agent John Hartley and Nolan Booth. Like many great heist film squads, they don't exactly get along, often fighting over the next steps of their plan and how to go about stopping the Bishop.

When they encounter their rival in Sotto Vice's vault in Valencia, she pokes fun at their working relationship, prompting them to get into a hilarious argument about the status of their "marriage of convenience," which seems to be on the rocks.

In My Heart

Booth: "I Was Going To Carry You In My Heart Like An Eternal Flame, You Stupid Complainer."

Ryan Reynolds and Dwayne Johnson in Red Notice

Though they spend most of the movie arguing and claiming to hate each other, Booth and Hartley spend a considerable amount of time bonding over the course of their hunt for the eggs, often exchanging stories about their disappointing fathers and their career aspirations in between action scenes.

During their escape from the Russian prison, Booth believes Hartley has been killed by the guards, proceeding to nearly leave the FBI agent behind. Hartley barely makes it into the helicopter before it flies away, demanding to know why his partner was about to leave him. Booth promises that he would have always "carried him in his heart," before throwing in a casual insult for good measure.

Looking Stupid

Booth: "If You Don't Know That, Then You Really Are Dumber Than I Look."

Dwayne Johnson, Ryan Reynolds, and Gal Gadot in Red Notice

If there is anything that the Deadpool franchise has taught fans, it's that Ryan Reynolds is not afraid to poke fun at himself. From criticizing his past cinematic failures like Green Lantern and X-Men Origins: Wolverine to openly calling himself out by name, Reynolds's characters have become increasingly self-aware ever since he took on the role of Wade Wilson.

This meta-humor comes out in a small but hilarious way when Booth and Hartley have been captured by Bishop and Sotto Voce under a bull-fighting arena. Despite the danger, the duo can't help but argue with one another, leading Booth to land a fantastic self-burn whilst insulting Hartley.

Good Guy/Bad Guy

Hartley: "See? I'm A Good Guy... But Sometimes I Do Bad Things."

Dwayne Johnson as John Hartley in Red Notice

Pro wrestler turned A-list actor Dwayne Johnson gives a stoic performance as Agent John Hartley in the film, an FBI analyst tasked with stopping Bishop from stealing Cleopatra's eggs. However, he is framed for the thefts and pursued by Interpol Inspector Urvashi Das (Ritu Arya).

Despite Hartley's seemingly strong character throughout the film, the finale takes a twist, revealing Hartley to actually be the Bishop's romantic partner-in-crime. This makes some of his cryptic lines to Inspector Das seem cold and calculated in retrospect.

Chess

Hartley: "There Are Two Bishops In Chess."

Bishop: "And A Whole Lotta Pawns."

Ryan Reynolds, Gal Gadot, and Dwayne Johnson in character at the end of Red Notice

In the aggressively telegraphed twist revealing Hartley as the second Bishop, the two masters in crime explain to a shell-shocked Booth their plan for coming into possession of all three eggs of Cleopatra, revealing the true genius of their thievery.

Hartley and his partner-in-crime use their codenames to allude to the game of chess, remarking that there are two bishops in the usual chess lineup, before referring to everyone else as merely their pawns. These lines perfectly sum up the crux of their plan, also establishing their clear superiority over the competition.
