Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant are best known as the co-creators of the original, British version of The Office, but the pair have also achieved enormous success in radio and podcasting. The Ricky Gervais Show has countless funny scenes and quotes to choose from, as the audio from features such as "Monkey News" and "Karl's Diary" is even funnier when brought to life with HBO's creatively animated visuals.

Along with their producer, Karl Pilkington, the trio's chemistry gained them a cult following that still binge-listens to their content on repeat to this day, and some lines stand out more than others.

"You Make Chickens And Monkeys Cleverer Than You In Your Stories, Which Is Weird." - Ricky

Karl, Steven and Ricky sit at the table on the Ricky Gervais show.

In season 1, episode 5, Karl is telling Ricky and Steve of how a farmer put an ax next to a chicken who wasn't laying enough eggs, and upon realizing that the ax was a threat, the terrified fowl then laid more eggs. A flabbergasted Ricky says this to Karl in response.

One of the biggest differences between the U.S. and U.K. versions of The Office is the Brit's brutal honesty. This quote is not only a funny criticism but also surprisingly accurate, upon further consideration. After all, Karl tells stories of monkeys who launch a rocket ship into outer space, hold a Ph.D. in physics, and manage a day spa for other monkeys.

"Hit The Left Button." - Karl

Monkey in space with a banana flag on Ricky Gervais Show

In season 1, episode 1, Karl is telling Ricky and Steve of a monkey who was trained via a "banana dispenser" to launch, pilot, and land a spaceship. He insists that while listening to commands from what would presumably be NASA's Mission Control Center, the monkey would carry out directives such as this one.

As an avid proponent of just reading a story's headline and nothing further, this quote perfectly sums up Karl's indifference towards details when relaying supposedly factual information. It's not surprising that he can't be bothered to impart what must have been a more complicated instruction on navigating the omni-directional planes of the cosmos.

"The Earth Is One Big Rock. Australia Is At The Bottom Of The Big Rock, And They're Trying To Hide Under It." - Karl

In season 2, episode 1, Steve is reading out Karl's diary, including his opinions on Australia, and the country's infamous population of snakes and spiders. He theorizes that as snakes and spiders typically hide under rocks, many are just hiding underneath the big rock that is the Earth.

While most of Karl Pilkington's best quotes are ridiculous upon first glance, and indeed, every glance thereafter, some have a hint of genius to them. While Ricky is right to immediately point out that Karl's concept of Earth's "under" is relative, there's just enough logic to what Karl's saying to make it clear how he arrived at and holds his hilarious hypothesis.

"How Would I Know Which One I Was?" - Karl

In season 2, episode 2, Steve reads out a fan's e-mail, asking Karl what he'd do if he were given the opportunity to spend a day with an exact replica of himself. Karl replies that it would confuse him, as his doppelganger would be equally sure that it was the "real" Karl, and would end up asking himself if he should leave his own house.

Ricky has often said of Karl that no one can predict how he'll answer any given question, and this quote encapsulates that truth as well as any other. To Karl's credit, his justification that his doppelganger would have the same memories, and would therefore be equally certain of his actual existence, is more reasonable than most of his philosophical ponderings.

"No, 'Cause They're Not My Hands, Either." - Karl

In season 2, episode 4, Ricky asks Karl about a hypothetical situation where his body is transplanted with the body of another man, and whether or not Karl would feel bad about gratifying himself while having someone else's genitals.

Karl's solution to the complication may or may not be "genius", as Ricky quickly exclaims, but it's indubitably clever and quick-witted. Especially so for a man who Ricky rudely introduces at the start of the series as someone who's merely "blossomed from an idiot into an imbecile." There's also a pure innocence to the delivery of Karl's answer that balances out Ricky's juvenile crassness.

"I'd Rather Be A Blind Moth." - Karl

In season 2, episode 5, Karl reads aloud his poem about cavemen and blind moths. Beginning with the terrific opening line, "If moths had eyes, would they be happier? How do they know they're not dead?" - he continues until concluding that a caveman wouldn't stand a chance in "dinosaur times," and he'd prefer to be a blind moth.

It's a special treat for Ricky and viewers that Karl has written a poem, as his poetic side is one of the things fans might not know about Karl. It certainly doesn't disappoint, nor does Karl's reading of it, which includes a pregnant pause before the final line for emphasis.

"Do You Need One? Not Really. I'm Sick Of Playing I-Spy, I'm Having A Sh*T!" - Karl

In season 2, episode 9, Steve brings up the topic of inventing vehicles with built-in toilets. Karl vehemently agrees on the practical applications of such an invention, despite Ricky's protestations. Karl insists that the toilet is for when it's really needed, and says the above line sarcastically to Ricky while roleplaying as someone using it.

While the banter between Ricky and Steve often involves roleplaying as other people in unusual scenarios, Karl is no less adept at stepping into a character's shoes and coming up with great lines. The best part about this quote is the delivery, with each syllable growing more contemptuous than the last, culminating in a rare curse word from Karl that lands with an effective thud. For die-hard fans, everything Ricky, Steve and Karl does is British comedy worthy of worldwide recognition.

"Don't Solve Problems. Because ... A Problem ... Solved ... Is A Problem ... Caused." - Karl

In season 3, episode 8, the trio is discussing medical care and superficial surgeries. Suggesting that medical advancements have caused people to "live too long," Karl then reminds the pair of one of his personal mantras.

One of the most astonishing things about the trio's chemistry is how often and how naturally a perfect comedic rhythm occurs. Capping off a rapid back-and-forth debate that appeared to be getting heated, this line is delivered at a glacial pace, and any tension is alleviated as the highly-risible Ricky bursts out, "I'm gonna die!" in laughter. It also summarizes Karl's opinions on charity, science, and philosophy quite nicely, i.e., he can't be bothered with most of it.

"Honestly, I Just Sat Like That With Me Head Forward, And Just Let It Drip." - Karl

In season 3, episode 12, the trio is discussing human salivary glands, and Karl specifically marvels at how there seems to be no end to the body's creation of saliva. He continues on to tell them of how he sat in his back garden for roughly 15 minutes, letting drool continuously pour from his mouth, agape.

The dumbstruck reactions of Ricky and Steve are intimately relatable to fans who hear this incredible story for the first time. It's no easy feat to leave the minds behind the funniest scenes in Extras speechless.

"Just Give 'Em Another 3% And Make 'Em Water. That's More Useful!" - Karl

Karl shrugging in his kitchen on the Ricky Gervais Show

In season 2, episode 3, the trio is discussing the importance of each organism's presence for a healthy ecosystem. Ever-adamant that some species aren't pulling their weight in the animal kingdom, Karl reminds the pair of his suggestion for what to do with jellyfish, which are made of approximately 97 percent water.

Perhaps the quintessential Karl quote, this line has everything that has made him a beloved cult phenomenon: a hint of genius unburdened by formal education, a hysterical and genuine misunderstanding about how the world works, and an undeserved arrogance that asserts the correctness of his one-of-a-kind opinions. Karl may be obstinant in his ludicrous beliefs, but the listening and viewing public have been all the better because of it.
