There was a time when Westerns were everywhere and many actors gave great performances playing rugged cowboys. In film, radio, and television, the 1940s, 50s, and 60s were the heydays for the genre. Their popularity began to fade in the 1970s. While there were respected films in the genre throughout the years, good Westerns are few and far between.
