At long last, One Piece is finally drawing to an end. Manga artist, Eiichiro Oda, confirmed that the manga is set to end once the Wano Country arc reaches its conclusion. Inevitably, this means that the anime's end is very much on the horizon.

One Piece has seen many characters come and go over the years, and the fans at Ranker have tried to determine which character is the best. Not every member of the Straw Hat crew made the cut into the top 10, but there are several pirates that have made quite a name for themselves.

Note: Ranker lists are live and continue to accrue votes, so some rankings may have changed after this publishing.

Marco The Phoenix

Marco the Phoenix activating his Devil Fruit

Marco the Phoenix is not only a strong fighter, but he has also built a strong reputation for himself. Having served as the former right-hand man of Whitebeard, this guy has a bounty of a whopping 1,374,000,000 berries, so he's always in the World Government's eye.

As far as his fighting skills go, Marco can turn into a phoenix (just as his name implies) and fly. Not only that, but this also grants him the ability to heal any wounds that he may have in his human form. Such an ability has made him one of the tougher pirates across the seas - although he could be a Straw Hat Pirate one day.

Silvers Rayleigh

Silvers Rayleigh himself is a legendary pirate. He was the first member of the Roger Pirates, which in turn made him the first mate of Gol D. Roger - a pirate with whom Luffy has some similarities. His name is known all around the globe, as the many adventures that he has been on with Roger have only added to his notoriety.

Ever since the Roger Pirates split up, Rayleigh has been laying low, for the most part - retiring as a pirate and working as a Coating Mechanic in the Sabaody Archipelago. But despite his old age, his bounty is still very much active.

Edward Newgate

Whitebeard himself, Edward Newgate has built a reputation as the "Strongest Man in the World." He has done enough to earn that moniker, being the captain of the Legendary Whitebeard Pirates and wielding the Gura Gura no Mi Devil Fruit.

Newgate was feared everywhere he went, as his Devil Fruit allowed him to destroy any world with just his fingertips. Absolutely no place on the globe was safe from Newgate, according to Vice Admiral Tsuru. Maybe that was one reason why Gol D. Roger was unable to best Newgate in a battle.

Nico Robin

Nico Robin

Nico Robin is unequivocally the breakout character of One Piece, wooing fans with her mystique, her initially dark personality, and her tear-jerking backstory. But thanks to the Straw Hat Pirates, this archaeologist loosened up over time, showing a more caring, motherly side to her. And her navigation skills have assured that the crew stays on track in regards to finding the One Piece.

On top of being a breakout character, Nico Robin is also a popular choice for cosplayers. Female fans have recreated many of Robin's famous looks, whether it's her early cowgirl look or her sarong skirt attire.

Sanji

Sanji is known as the resident cook on the Straw Hat crew, having cooked numerous meals for his pirate friends. He's also quite a flirt with the ladies, which has rubbed some folks the wrong way.

But if there's one thing that fans and critics can agree on, it's that Sanji is one of the more complex characters in the anime. His character development has revealed a lot of his humanity and mental struggles. His overall characterization has made him an awfully popular character, and Sanji has placed third in several Shonen Jump popularity contests.

Trafalgar Law

It might be hard to believe, but Trafalgar Law wasn't intended to be a key character in One Piece. According to an interview with One Piece Log 27, Oda originally believed that Eustass Kid would have more prominence as he developed One Piece's Worst Generation.

Nevertheless, Trafalgar has gone on to become a huge fan favorite, with his serious attitude, swordsmanship, and handsome looks. He may never be a Straw Hat Pirate anytime soon, but that hasn't stopped him from having an enduring fanbase.

Portgas D. Ace

Being voiced by Travis Willingham may have helped him win some style points, but there's more to Portgas D. Ace than just his voice actor. Ace is one of the more pivotal characters in the One Piece story, having looked after Luffy and made him the man he has become.

Even after his death (when he sacrificed himself to save Luffy from Admiral Akainu), Ace has remained a very popular and well-loved character. His death scene may have surprised lots of fans - and even had Oda's staff grieving a bit - but it hasn't done much to diminish his lasting appeal.

Shanks

A character who was introduced early on in One Piece, Shanks has done a lot to work his way towards being a Yonko of the Sea. The youngest among the other Emperors, he's a captain of his own crew, the Red Hair Pirates, and also one of the best swordsmen in the anime realm.

Shanks has only appeared occasionally, and the mystique surrounding him has only made him more captivating in the eyes of fans. His strength has been implied for the most part, but his Yonko status and his constant duels with the Strongest Swordsman, Dracule Mihawk, serve as a glimpse of how strong he truly is.

Roronoa Zoro

While Luffy may be the main guy, Roronoa Zoro is often considered to be the favorite character for some. He is an exceptionally skilled combatant who has huge aspirations of becoming the strongest swordsman in the world. He was recruited into Luffy's crew even despite his reputation, which Luffy happened to overlook - and the fans who adore Zoro might be in the same boat.

When it comes to popularity polls, Zoro typically finishes second to Luffy in nearly every poll recorded. It's a trend that has taken place ever since the start of One Piece and shows no sign of ending anytime soon.

Monkey D. Luffy

The Straw Hat captain himself has endeared himself over the years with his happy-go-lucky and goofy personality. Luffy acts so much like a goofball, that it might be easy to forget that he has one of the biggest bounties on his head. And given how mindless and silly he acts, he certainly doesn't fit the mold of a most-wanted pirate.

Nevertheless, Luffy has had many incredible moments in his adventures as he sails across the seas. He's also gotten into plenty of memorable battles as well, and each time he prevails causes his star to shine brighter than before.
