Summary

  • Apple TV+ differentiates itself by focusing on original content, rarely adding licensed material like its streaming competitors.
  • March saw a unique addition of 55 licensed movies to the platform, including the Oscar-nominated Argo for a limited time.
  • In April 2024, Apple TV+ continues its original content trend with new series like Franklin and Sugar, adding more episodes weekly.

Apple TV+ is known for its award-winning original movies and shows, and some great new movies and TV shows will arrive on the platform in April 2024. Apple TV+ positioned itself as an alternative to Netflix by offering exclusive original content not found elsewhere. Unlike other streaming services, the Apple TV+ catalog remains mostly constant, typically only adding original content to the service and rarely adding licensed material, keeping it unique among streaming options. April sees the service adding more originals with titles like Michael Douglas's Franklin, Colin Farrell's Sugar, and the documentary series Girls State.

In March, Apple TV+ surprised fans by adding 55 popular licensed movies for a limited engagement. This is unusual because AppleTV+ has very few licensed movies and TV shows, and many of these titles were only available through the end of March, with others remaining on the service until the end of April. One notable title on the service through the end of April is the Oscar-nominated movie Argo. However, the March releases seem like a one-time deal as Apple TV+ is only adding originals in April 2024. The Apple TV+ original series Palm Royale is also adding more new episodes weekly through May 8.

Loot Season 2

Loot returns to Apple TV+ in April 2024 with its second season. The series, which premiered in 2022 as an Apple TV+ original, stars Maya Rudolph as Molly, a woman who divorces her billionaire husband, becoming the third-wealthiest woman in the world. She focuses on the charity foundation that she forgot she initially founded. The second Loot season opens a year after Molly's divorce when she is in charge of the foundation and promises to give away her entire fortune, but she can't seem to get by without the help of her trusted assistant, Nicholas (Joel Kim Booster).

The first season of Loot has good reviews, with an 81% Rotten Tomatoes score.

The first season of Loot had 10 episodes and the second season matches that, with the first two episodes dropping on the service on April 3. There will be a new episode every week after that until the season 2 finale on May 29. The first season of Loot has good reviews, with an 81% Rotten Tomatoes score, and critics point out similarities between Maya's Molly and MacKenzie Scott, the ex-wife of Amazon billionaire Jeff Bezos.

Sugar

Colin Farrell has two TV shows coming to streaming services in 2024. While his biggest series is the DCU release, Penguin, on Max, he first has a drama mystery series called Sugar hitting Apple TV+ first. The streaming service calls this a "genre-bending contemporary take on the private detective story." Farrell stars as John Sugar, a private detective hired to find out information on the disappearance of the granddaughter of a legendary movie producer. However, as he looks for Olivia, he uncovers dark secrets about the Siegel family.

The trailer looks like a contemporary take on movies like Chinatown. There will be eight episodes in the season, with every installment directed by Fernando Meirelles (The Oscar-nominated director of The Constant Gardener) and four of the eight written by series creator Mark Protosevich (the writer of the MCU's Thor). The first three episodes will drop on Apple TV+ on April 5 and then one episode a week will drop until the season finale on May 10.

Girls State

In 2020, Apple TV+ released the original documentary series Boys State, which saw thousands of high school students brought together in Texas to help form a new government from the ground up. With students from different nationalities and socio-economic backgrounds, it provided a fascinating look at the world today. In April 2024, Apple TV+ is back with Girls State, which has the same idea but follows young women who gather in Missouri for the same task. The girls will set out to build the government in the week-long experiment.

Girls State had its world premiere at the 2024 Sundance Film Festival in January

In a world built on patriarchy, it is another fascinating look - this time with young women who want to help change the world. Jesse Moss and Amanda McBaine return after directing Boys State to direct this follow-up. Girls State had its world premiere at the 2024 Sundance Film Festival in January, and it arrives on Apple TV+ on April 5, just less than three months after that screening.

Boys State won the Primetime Creative Arts Emmy Award for Outstanding Documentary or Nonfiction Special.

Franklin

In March 2024, Apple TV+ released its original movie Napoleon, a few months after it sent it to theaters. On April 12, another historical biopic is coming - but this one is premiering on the streaming service as a limited series. Franklin stars Michael Douglas, who also serves as executive producer, as Benjamin Franklin. Based on the book A Great Improvisation: Franklin, France, and the Birth of America, Franklin, the world-famous inventor travels to France as an Ambassador to convince them to help the United States in its war with England, but traitors and spies threaten his success.

The Big Door Prize Season 2

The second season of the Apple TV+ original comedy The Big Door Prize arrives late in April 2024, continuing the story of a small town influenced by a mysterious machine that reveals everyone's true potential. While the first season saw everyone start to change jobs and start to improve their lives, the Morpho machine has bigger plans and prepares everyone in the town for the second phase. While everyone now knows their potential, the machine begins to offer visions and new relationships form, while some people begin to ask questions about the true end game.

Joining Michael Douglas in the Franklin cast is Noah Jupe (A Quiet Place) as his son William Temple Franklin, Eddie Marsan as John Aams, and French actors Marc Duret, Ludivine Sagnier, and Thibault de Montalembert. The first three episodes drop on Apple TV+ on April 24, with the premiere directed by Tim Van Patten (The Pacific) and co-written by Kirk Ellis and Howard Korder (Boardwalk Empire), who penned every installment of the limited series.
