A Little Princess

A Little Princess

Based on the novel by Frances Hodgson Burnett and directed by Alfonso Cuarón, A Little Princess is a quintessential riches-to-rags tale about the power of friendship, kindness, and the imagination. Liesel Matthews plays Sara Crewe, who is raised in India but sent to a girls' boarding school in New York when her father is called up to fight in World War I. As one of the wealthiest students at the school, Sara is treated like a "little princess" until word arrives that her father has been killed in the war, leaving her bills unpaid. To pay off her debts, Sara is forced to work as a servant for the girls that were once her classmates - but even in the hardest of times, she never loses her spirit.

Dev Patel in Lion

Based on the astonishing true story of Saroo Brierly (played by Dev Patel), Lion was directed by Garth Davis and scored six Oscar nominations following its release in 2016. Five year-old Saroo becomes separated from his older brother at a train station and boards a train that ends up carrying him on a thousand-mile journey to Calcutta, where he knows no one and doesn't even speak the local language. Saroo is eventually adopted by a family in Australia, and as an adult he embarks on an intense research mission, trying to figure out where he originally came from using only Google Earth, and what little he can remember from his early childhood.

The Neverending Story

Neverending Story Falkor Atreyu Dragon

A fantasy classic from the 1980s, The Neverending Story is a tale within a tale. Shy bookworm Bastian Balthazar Bux (Barret Oliver) discovers an intriguing book while hiding from bullies on a bookstore, and decides he has to borrow it. The book is about a young warrior called Atreyu (Noah Hathaway), who is tasked with finding a cure for the ruler of the land of Fantasia, The Childlike Empress (Tami Stronach). However, the quest will not be easy, as a mysterious force known only as "The Nothing" is consuming Fantasia, and Atreyu's path is fraught with danger and peril.

Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl

The Pirates of the Caribbean franchise may have gone somewhat astray in later entries, but it's hard to beat the first entry, Curse of the Black Pearl, which revived the long-dormant genre of pirate movies. Directed by Gore Verbinski and released in 2003, Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl introduced the world to Johnny Depp's Captain Jack Sparrow, who has been ejected from his position as Captain of the Black Pearl. His former ship is now captained by Hector Barbossa (Geoffrey Rush), and thanks to the theft of a chest of cursed gold, the entire crew are forced to roam the world as the undead, immune to death and transforming into spooky skeletons at night.
