The long-awaited Sundance 2020 winner and A24 hit Minari finally released to theaters last week, and while it won't come to video on demand until later this month, some audiences are already pining for more Minari. The 1980s family drama about a Korean family who moves to Arkansas to start a farm is based on filmmaker Lee Isaac Chung's life and stars stand-out performances from Steven Yeun, Alan S. Kim, and Yuh-Jung Youn.

Minari may be a generationally unique film packed full of emotion and struggle, but there are still plenty of other heartfelt dramas made in recent years that will bring tears to audiences' eyes and tug at their heartstrings.

Babyteeth

Eliza Scanlen as Milla sitting by the poolside with blue hair staring up at the sky

This 2020 Australian film follows a dying teenage girl, Milla, as she falls in love with a small-time drug dealer who's been kicked out of his home.

The touching performances from Eliza Scanlen and Toby Wallace give this film its heart, while Ben Mendelsohn and Essie Davis bring a comedic edge as Milla's parents. The Australian suburbs of Babyteeth are a far cry from the farmlands of rural America, but both films carry the message of "family first."

Captain Fantastic

The cast of Captain Fantastic

This 2016 title might sound like a superhero film, but it's actually a dramedy about an unconventional family living off the grid in the Pacific Northwest. The family's father and six children are forced back into civilization when their matriarch dies, and their world is thrown upside down.

While preaching a "stick-it-to-the-man" mantra, Ben Cash (Viggo Mortensen) must adapt to raising six children on his own in a more "normal" fashion. It is as silly as it is heartwarming.

Honey Boy

Honey Boy is a snapshot of writer and star Shia LaBeouf's abusive childhood relationship with his rodeo clown father. This small indie film stars LaBeouf as his father James, Noah Jupe as a childhood Shia, and Lucas Hedges as a mid-career Shia writing the script for Honey Boy while in rehab.

Though it takes place almost entirely at a motel in Los Angeles, the confined setting only serves to elevate the tension between father and son until it reaches its tearful finale.

Tigertail

Tigertail is a recent Netflix drama following one Taiwanese family over three generations, tracking their journey from Taiwan to California.

Written and directed by Alan Yang, a former writer of Parks & Recreation and Master of NoneTigertail is a surprising departure from Yang's comedic career. It is slow and sentimental and features a captivating lead performance from Tzi Ma. And for fans of Twin Peaks, Joan Chen returns to their lives with a great cameo as a lost love interest.

Columbus

Haley Lu Richardson and John Cho in Columbus

Kogonada's directorial debut is less of a film and more of a walking tour through Columbus, Indiana, highlighting the city's famous modernist architecture. Columbus follows Casey, a recent high school graduate (Haley Lu Richardson), as she gives a literal tour of Columbus to international businessman Jin Lee (John Cho).

Just as Casey is stuck in Columbus before going to college, Jin Lee is also stuck there as his father is dying in the local hospital. This is a film about taking in the beauty of where you are, and it does so in a stunningly picturesque way.

The Farewell

The cast of The Farewell

Much like Minari, this A24 dramedy is centered around an Asian-American family living with an ailing grandmother. With a breakout performance from Awkwafina, paired with the steady hand of Tzi Ma, The Farewell was adorned with rave reviews and awards in 2019.

It takes a rare talent to balance comedy and tears, something filmmaker Lulu Wang is familiar with. Because of that talent, audiences are already eager to see what she'll do next.

Our Friend

Casey Affleck and Dakota Johnson in Our Friend

It's taken a few years for Gabriela Cowperthwaite's Our Friend to finally make it to theaters. After debuting in 2019 at the Toronto International Film Festival, the film is finally available to the public in 2021.

Starring Casey Affleck, Jason Segel, and Dakota Johnson, Our Friend tells the true story of a man who moves in with his best friends, a married couple struggling to balance a cancer diagnosis with raising their two young daughters. They aren't a conventional family, but through their struggles, they're bonded like one, and Our Friend tells the true story beautifully.

First Cow

John Maguro in First Cow standing with a cow

This A24 period piece about a cook and an immigrant who start a biscuit business in 1800s Oregon by stealing milk from the town's one cow has been praised as one of, if not the, best film of 2020.

It's a slow-burning drama that sneaks its way into audiences' hearts and basks them in empathy. Much like Minari, the plot of First Cow is secondary to the human emotion painted onto the screen. For First Cow, feeling comes above all else.

Burning

The cast of Burning

For viewers of Minari that are curious as to the whereabouts of Steven Yeun since his departure from The Walking Dead and his award-winning performance in Minari, they need to look no further than the 2018 Korean filmBurning.

This cerebral drama, based on a Haruki Murakami short story, follows a young man who believes that his crush has been killed by a wealthy bachelor who claims to "burn down greenhouses." It is one of the smartest films in recent memory, and it features one of Steven Yeun's best performances to date. Like MinariBurning is required viewing on the Steven Yeun syllabus.

Driveways

A young boy rests his head on an old man's shoulder in Driveways.

To think that two films so similar came out within 12 months of each other might seem unlikely, and yet Driveways was released just last May. This heartfelt film by Andrew Ahn follows a single mother of a lonesome son, as they travel to an upstate New York suburb to clean out the house of her recently deceased sister.

While Mama Kathy cleans her sister's home, her son Kody befriends an elderly neighbor, Del (who is portrayed by Brian Dennehy in one of his final performances). While Minari gets a well-deserved spotlight for being a poignant family drama that makes you laugh and cry, Driveways is the film's forgotten cousin, a hidden gem of equal worth.
