Many people have heard about the Gucci fashion brand, but the story behind the once-powerful family is even more intriguing. Ridley Scott's newest biopic, House of Gucci, showcases the Italian family living through family drama and betrayal, which changed the Gucci brand as we know it today. Although the film suffers from a choppy story, long runtime, and occasional dullness, it thrives from the fantastic performances of their Gucci family counterparts, especially Lady Gaga.

The plot in House of Gucci has a lot going on with aspects of the clan business and fashion mixed with family drama, betrayal, and murder. Of course, it is not the only one of its kind, as many films have followed similar themes and narrations, like fashion biopics and thriller dramas.

I, Tonya (2017) - Available On Hulu

Margot Robbie in I Tonya

This sports biopic, I, Tonya, recounts the career of a figure skater, Tonya Harding. Even with her accomplishments as a figure skater, she remains notorious for the most scandalous sports moment; she conspired with her ex-husband to harm another figure skater, Nancy Kerrigan, for a spot in the 1994 U.S. Figure Skating Championships.

Fortunately, the sports biopic involves no murder, like House of Gucci. But, it does echo a familiar story of a high-profile individual hiring a hitman to conduct a misdeed, such as Tonya Harding and Patrizia Reggiani. Of course, these moments are infamous in either the sports or fashion world. However, I, Tonya differs from House of Gucci with its tone, which has a humorous attitude to its storytelling without undermining the severity of the scandal. In one of her best movies per Rotten Tomatoes, Margot Robbie delivers a fantastic portrayal of Harding.

The Wolf Of Wall Street (2013) - Available On Pluto TV

Leonardo DiCaprio as Jordan Belfort in The Wolf Of Wall Street

Directed by Martin Scorsese, The Wolf of Wall Street follows the rise and fall of stockbroker Jordan Belfort. He pursues a career at a brokerage firm, but his life spirals down when the FBI targets him for defrauding investors.

Given Scorsese's cinematic prominence in crime thrillers, he eases up on the sternness of this film by pursuing a different approach to black comedy. Although an unusual style for the director, it is worth the calculated risk for this crime biopic to showcase Belfort's lavish and wild lifestyle. Scorsese reunites with his collaborator Leonardo DiCaprio to execute it. Of course, the film showcases Belfort's ambition and eventual consequence of his crimes, which parallels the character arc of Patrizia Reggiani in House of Gucci - minus any murder from Belfort.

Coco Before Chanel (2009) - Available To Rent On Apple TV+

Coco Chanel in Coco Before Chanel

A Perfect Murder (1998) - Available On MAX Go

Michael douglas puts a necklace on gwenyth paltrow in a perfect murder

In A Perfect Murder, Wall Street financier Steven Taylor learns about his wife's infidelity. He plots to have his wife killed by hiring his wife's lover, with hopes of earning millions of insurance money. However, the plans do not go as expected.

As a fictionalized crime-thriller, A Perfect Murder echoes some themes in House of Gucci, such as financial ambitions, betrayal, and murder. Although this 1998 film is flawed with its execution and lack of ingenuity, it still has enough suspense that makes up for an entertaining mystery-thriller, especially given its star-studded cast of Michael Douglas, Gwyneth Paltrow, and Viggo Mortensen.

Phantom Thread (2017) - Available On MAX Go

Daniel Day-Lewis as Reynolds Woodcock fitting a dress in Phantom Thread

Paul Thomas Anderson's Phantom Thread follows Reynolds Woodcock, who established a reputable career and sumptuous lifestyle as a dressmaker. However, he eventually falls for a young woman, who ends up being a disruption to his work.

This drama ticks off many familiar features from House of Gucci, such as the fashion premise. Furthermore, Patrizia Reggiani from House of Gucci and Alma from Phantom Thread share a strong-willed personality and commit heinous acts. Also, Reynolds and Alma's relationship in Phantom Thread resembles the romantic but overbearing marriage between Patrizia Reggiani and Maurizio Gucci in House of GucciPhantom Thread takes intoxicating yet passionate love to a different level, which creates a twisted and astonishing story.

Cruella (2021) - Available On Disney+

Cruella posing for photographers in Cruella

Many people are familiar with the 101 Dalmations and its villain, Cruella de Vil. But, Disney reinvented de Vil's origin story in Cruella. The film follows Estella, an aspiring fashion designer who adopts a wicked persona as Cruella to seek vengeance against the Baroness.

Even though Cruella is a Disney film made for families and children, the story surprisingly presents similar themes in House of Gucci: fashion, family drama, betrayal, and murder. Cruella is more fun with its story and benefits from the striking visuals and incredible costume to magnify the fashion drama. Also, Emma Stone delivers a fantastic performance to present a more sympathetic and humanizing side of Cruella compared to her villainous self in the original movies.

Goodfellas (1990) - Available On HBO Max

Goodfellas Henry Karen

Goodfellas also follows a similar story progression of Hill's day-to-day life leading up to his low points, like the Gucci family in House of Gucci. Also, the film has themes of betrayal and marriage drama, as Hill and his wife have a tumultuous marriage. This mobster film accentuates its stylish, complex, and nuanced story with remarkable performances from the cast, including Joe Pesci, Ray Liotta, and Robert De Niro.

Gone Girl (2014) - Available On Hulu

Nick addresses a crowd with a picture of his missing wife behind him in Gone Girl

In Gone Girl, Amy Dunne has gone missing, and as the media learns the details of her tumultuous marriage, Nick Dunne becomes a suspect. However, things do not appear as they seem when Amy's true intentions unravel.

Amy Dunne parallels the ambitions, headstrong personality, and determination of Patrizia Reggiani, even going to the extremes to manipulate and punish their spouses for their wrongdoings - including cheating. Of course, Amy displays a more layered, cunning, and wicked characterization. The story is intelligent and dark as it reveals the biggest plot twist and does with style and flair for any viewers to immerse into one of the best modern noir films, from director David Fincher.

Saint Laurent (2014) - Available To Rent On Apple TV+

Saint Laurent smoking in Saint Laurent

Another movie about a fashion designer is the 2014 French biopic, Saint Laurent. Like any film about fashion, it showcases Laurent's talents and imagination during his career zenith, experiencing a lavish lifestyle.

Like the Gucci family in House of GucciSaint Laurent presents the high and low points of his life, including his substance abuse and troubling relationships. Although the biographical insight is flawed, this biopic still brings enough excitement within its story to portray the best of Saint Laurent.

All Good Things (2010) - Available On Hoopla & Kanopy

Ryan Gosling and Kirsten Dunst in All Good Things

Perhaps, the one movie that reminiscences everything distinct about House of Gucci - the biographical influence, the troubling marriage, and crime elements - is the 2010 film, All Good Things. Like Maurizio Gucci in House of Gucci, David Marks is a wealthy heir who falls in love and marries an ordinary woman named Katie. He slowly works in his father's business, but it takes a toll on his marriage - much like Patrizia and Maurizio in House of Gucci.

The similarities of the two films in terms of plot and characterizations are undeniable. There are some role reversals in terms of the characters committing the crime, but All Good Things echoes everything in the style and storytelling of House of Gucci, except for the characters' names changed from their real-life counterparts. All Good Things does have some flaws with its unoriginal execution of the true story, but it benefits from the masterful acting from Ryan Gosling, Kirsten Dunst, and Frank Langella.
