The Mummy series was almost revived in 2017 after Tom Cruise starred in the latest iteration, but it appears the franchise might be lost for a while. For fans, however, it is the Brendan Fraser starrer that they most identify with.

That trilogy still commands a lot of fans who would love to have a similar viewing experience. That said, you do have many options for movies of the same formula and we’re here to present you with just that. In this list, we’ve compiled films that have the spirit of The Mummy franchise of action, comedy, and especially adventure.

Indiana Jones And The Temple Of Doom (1984)

A prequel to the series, Indiana Jones’ first chronological adventure sees him drop in India where he comes across cult practicing in dark magic, and has to rescue the village people from these evil sacrificial ritualists. 

The film got a bad rap at the time of its release for being much darker than people wanted, but Temple of Doom is an awesome romp through the adventure genre that is mixed with comedy and intense action set pieces. The span of time since its release has meant the gory moments now have a goofy charm about them.

Pirates Of The Caribbean: The Curse Of The Black Pearl (2003)

In the Golden Age of Piracy, undead pirates led by Hector Barbossa of the Black Pearl ship kidnap the Governor’s daughter Elizabeth Swann, whose rescue is conducted by her suitor Will Turner and the infamous Captain Jack Sparrow. 

This film is credited with bringing the pirate genre back to success, and chief credit has to go to the character of Jack Sparrow for being one of the most entertaining protagonists ever. With a supernatural element involved and an adventure that takes the heroes across the pirate world, the movie entertains every minute of its runtime.

National Treasure: Book Of Secrets (2007)

Following his original adventure to uncover national secrets, Ben Gates now has to search for the city of gold in order to clear his family’s name from the murder of Abraham Lincoln. Along the way, he has to kidnap the President of the United States to complete his mission.

You won’t find any monsters in this flick, but what you will have similar to The Mummy is a fast paced film that keeps changing its locations as the heroes evade foes and solve puzzles to reach the grand climax of a lost city. Its own brand of comedy from the chemistry of its leads makes this one of the more likable cast you’ll find.

The Great Wall (2016)

In the past, two travelers from Europe arrive in China to acquire the secret to gunpowder, but became embroiled in a horrifying battle between monsters and the army as the fate of the world is threatened at large. 

Not only do you get to see the heroes battling monsters here, you’ve also got one of the more visually breathtaking movies ever made. The Great Wall’s larger than life plot meant there were no real boundaries to its action and adventure, as the film brought entertainment value at every turn.

Sahara (2005)

The explorer Dirk Pitt goes on an adventure of a lifetime to seek out the treasure of a lost ship from the Civil War. Along with his sidekick and a beautiful scientist, Pitt’s search takes him to the Sahara desert where he finds more than he bargained for.

You can’t pass up this film when you’ve got leads like Matthew McConaughey and Penelope Cruz in a story that is light on the seriousness and big on the epic scale of presentation. It’s a charming action comedy that will pique the interest of your inner traveler.

Jumanji: Welcome To The Jungle (2017)

Four teenagers find the long lost Jumanji video game and end up getting sucked in and trapped in avatars that are extremely unlike themselves. In order to escape, they must beat the game or die trying.

The second Jumanji is better suited for viewers to follow as this one has a modern format that features the planet’s biggest superstar in The Rock and able comedians that are guaranteed to make you laugh. The sense of adventure is strong here, with the world of Jumanji an exciting place to behold.

Van Helsing (2004)

Monster hunter Gabriel Van Helsing is assigned to Transylvania with the task of taking down Count Dracula before he can use Frankenstein’s monster to power the births of his children. While there, Van Helsing is confronted by his past.

It’s hard not to be entertained when you’ve got vampires, werewolves, Mr. Hyde, and several other monsters in this dream crossover , along with Hugh Jackman in fine form. The Mummy fans won’t take long to feel at home here, what with the charming lead and monsters that will both fright and delight.

The Forbidden Kingdom (2008)

A teenager in present day happens upon a golden staff that takes him to the past. After he arrives, the boy learns the staff is central to the conflict between the magical Monkey King and the Jade Warlord, and is the key to end this war.

For most people, all you need to do is point out that this film features Jackie Chan and that should be enough reason to watch. Along with that, The Forbidden Kingdom is simple fun that packs in incredible martial arts sequences and a journey on the road filled with peril and wonder.

Prince Of Persia: The Sands Of Time (2010)

In Ancient Persia, a prince helps overthrow a holy city where he encounters a beautiful princess who warns him of his actions. Realizing he’s been fooled by his uncle, the prince and the princess plan a dangerous journey to reverse time using a magical dagger.

Being one of the best films based on a video game, Prince of Persia is bolstered by the performances of its cast, who present all facets of comedy, action, drama, and more. Like The Mummy, the film makes use of its desert landscape and period setting to have a unique, fun-filled experience for the viewer.

Journey To The Center Of The Earth (2008)

Volcanologist Trevor Anderson heads to Iceland with his nephew to search for his long-missing brother. While there, the two and another fellow volcanologist uncover the entrance to the center of the world and discover a land never discovered before.

One needs to appreciate the entertainment brought by Brendan Fraser at his peak, and Journey to the Center of the Earth is a similar feature to Frasier’s The Mummy as his trademark action persona is in full flow here as well. The film’s effects still hold up well and it’s a great watch for a breezy blockbuster film experience filled with thrills galore.
