Catching up on shows or rewatching series to refresh the memory for upcoming seasons is great, but a movie binge is a classic way to spend a day off. When thinking of binging movie series, popular franchises: Star Wars, Harry Potter, all the different Marvel and DC movies, Fast And The Furious, and Lord of The Rings come to mind. Great choice but obvious ones, sometimes it is nice to have some variety. This list of binge-worthy movie franchises gives audiences a little action, fantasy, sci-fi, and even drama and romance to appease everyone in the house on a day off.

The Matrix Franchise

The Matrix series has been around since 1999 and the franchise grew when Reloaded and Revolutions came out as a series in 2003.

While it has been 17 years since the last movie, the series is making a comeback this year with the fourth movie dropping in just three months. The actors have all grown so much in talent and fame since their start with this franchise so the anticipation and expectation for this fourth movie 17 years later might be a little higher than any of the other movies. The series also supplies you with a nice dose of action with a mix of sci-fi and fantasy - kind of like Inception does for audiences since 2010.

Pirates Of The Caribbean Franchise

Johnny Depp as Jack Sparrow

A series filled with fantasy and comedy and even hints of romance - Pirates Of The Caribbean has graced us with five movies since 2003 when the first film Pirates Of The Caribbean: The Curse Of The Black Pearl came out and fans fell in love with another popular trio: Johnny Depp, Kiera Knightley, and Orlando Bloom. In just three years Dead Man's Chest was released and followed with it At World's End only a year after.

Three well-received movies is usually enough for most popular franchises but Pirates Of The Caribbean continued with a fourth and fifth movie: On Stranger Tides and Dead Men Tell No Tales proving that a well-liked cast and a well-written script - open to numerous and endless plots - can make for a lengthy career.

The Hangover Franchise

The main cast of the Hangover

Comedy can be a difficult genre to do well, let alone do well multiple times. The Hangover first came out 11 years ago and was a hit because of the storyline and cast: Zach Galifianakis, Bradley Cooper, Ed Helms, Justin Bartha, and the beloved Ken Jeong.

The following two movies keep with the same plot which can have some fans straying from the receptive storylines while others may be so addicted to how well the cast pulls it off, they keep coming back. A great franchise to binge watch because hours of laughing is always welcome.

Toy Story Franchise

Disney and Pixar have come out with movies that people have grown up with or have introduced to their own kids for the tradition or nostalgia, and the Toy Story franchise is no different. A childhood favorite, Woody and Buzz have entertained viewers since 1995.

On days off sometimes the kids need a fulfilling series to watch as well and Toy Story offers families four movies to choose from: the first two released in the '90s and the latter two in the year 2000. The newest edition to the franchise coming at the end of this year - Lamp Life - is the first attachment that does not have the famous name in the title or the usual characters, but Woody will of course still be there.

Jurassic Park Franchise

The best part about the Jurassic Park franchise is that on a day off you could choose to binge the '90s - '01 series: Jurassic Park, The Lost World: Jurassic Park, and Jurassic Park III starring the beloved Jeff Goldblum or the 2000 series with the charming Chris Pratt. After the third movie aired in 2001 the franchise took a hiatus for 14 years before they revived the series with a new cast.

The series came back strong with Jurassic World and Fallen Kingdom. The Jurassic Park and Jurassic World movies are great binge movies for anyone in the household and with Jurassic World: Dominion scheduled to be released next year, it's never a bad idea to use the day off to binge and refresh the memory.

Rocky (& Creed) Franchise

A classic then and a classic now, the Rocky franchise has been around since 1976 and the famous Sylvester Stallone continued this empire of a franchise with four more movies titled with their respective numbers. Rocky - Rocky V  ran from the '70s until 1990 but Stallone in 2006 the sixth edition to the never-ending franchise was added and dedicated fans finally had Rocky Balboa after a 16 year hiatus.

While the Rocky series discontinued after the 2006 film Stallone didn't give up on the magic of the Balboa storyline and decided to work on the spin-off movie series, Creed, that follows the son of Balboa's famous competitor, Apollo Creed. Starring Michael B. Jordan alongside Stallone himself, Creed and Creed: II has been able to keep the famous storyline alive. So many movies in this franchise, this is definitely a great choice to keep you captivated for hours on end... alongside Stallone's other popular movie series: The Expendables.

Tranformers Franchise

Bumblebee in the Transformers

Another action and sci-fi/fantasy series that can satisfy anyone - the Transformers franchise has been around since 2007 when it starred the original cast of Shia LaBeouf and Megan Fox, while they both continued with Transformers: Revenge Of The Fallen in 2009 Shia worked on the third movie Dark Of The Moon without Fox.

The lead role was replaced with Wahlberg in Age Of Extinction and The Last Knight, which was a smart transition since he combines action and comedy well. An action-filled series with numerous movies to pick from, while fans also have the 2018 film Bumblebee where fans finally get to see some insight into one of their favorite Transformer's life.

The Mummy Franchise

The Mummy threatening the main characters

Despite the third movie Tomb Of The Dragon Emperor, the first two movies -  The Mummy and The Mummy Returns - was such a hit The Scorpion King became an attachment of the series as the franchise studied a new character introduced in the second movie.

Of course, almost 10 years after the third movie, Tom Cruise comes on a new mission as the new lead in the reboot of The Mummy in 2017. Cruise's version was definitely a darker take on the original movies so it dips into the horror genre as well. Between the original movies, the reboot and The Scorpion King attachment starring Dwayne Johnson, this franchise offers a lot of options for a day off of binging.

The Hunger Games Franchise

Book to screen adaptations have become some of the most popular hits in theaters and on streaming outlets and The Hunger Games has been an audience favorite since 2012 when the first movie came out. The books were already a hit and the movies were no different - making almost 3 million between the four movies, The Hunger Games became the 21st highest producing franchise.

While the theme of the books and movies may appear a little dark at times, the overall message in the series is worth watching for kids and teens as well as adults. The book series was a trilogy but the movies stretched the third movie to a fourth continuation.

John Wick Franchise

When it comes to series with hitman as the lead John Wick is definitely up there in complimentary talks. Similar to this franchise are other great binge-worthy movies that star hitmen or spy agents: the Bourne franchise, Mission Impossible, 007, and even The Equalizer.

The character John Wick is a captivating one and Keanu Reeves makes the list yet again because he's able to sustain the character throughout all three movies, so much so that the fourth movie is due next year.
