Choosing the Monitor That’s Best for You: What You Need to Know

What should you look out for in order to avoid the ever-present pitfalls that lie waiting on your quest for choosing the perfect monitor — especially in light of the seemingly ever-changing list of terms you’re somehow meant to keep track of?

Here are key pointers to ensure you will get to select the monitor that meets all your needs.

Screen Resolution

This term refers to the number of pixels a monitor is capable of displaying. Generally, computer monitors come with resolutions that include the following:

  • HD (High Definition): 1366 x 768
  • HD Plus (High Definition Plus): 1600 x 900
  • FHD (Full High Definition):1920 x 1080
  • QHD (Quad High Definition): 2560 X 1440
  • UHD (Ultra High Definition): 3840 X 2160. Also referred to as 4k.

While HD Plus is the minimum you should look for if you are interested in routine tasks, FHD is the recommended starting point for gamers. And it only goes uphill from there with the others. Until you reach the ultimate in high-end gaming: UHD.

Connectivity Options

Most monitors will have HDMI (High-Definition Multimedia Interface) ports that transport data digitally and are ideal for recently released consoles and mobile devices.

Some also come with VGA (Video Graphics Array) ports which function using analog technology and can come in handy for your older consoles, for example.

Some manufacturers also provide connectivity options for your mouse, keyboard, and speakers. Or even come with inbuilt speakers themselves.

Monitor Size

While big screens have their benefits, they certainly have their drawbacks. Especially if their resolutions don’t quite measure up.

So what is the best size to go for? Twenty-four inches is a great place to begin. As you go higher you will need to pay close attention to resolution, too. FHD will do nicely up to 27 inches, however, QHD values are ideal for monitors of that size. If you intend to go over that i.e., 28 inches or even all the way up to 32 inches, you will need to ensure your monitor of choice has a resolution of 4K.

These pointers while pretty important, are by no means exhaustive. This is why we’ve also specified other key points in our guide. That said, they are an excellent starting point in your search for the ideal monitor. To ensure you select the device which is just perfect for you.
