Members of Marvel Studios' premiere superhero team, the Avengers, have delivered many memorable quotes during their tenure in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The titular team first came together in 2012's The Avengers, after its core members had been set up during the MCU's Phase 1 projects. The original Avengers team, consisting of Iron Man, Captain America, the Hulk, Thor, Black Widow, and Hawkeye, banded together to save the world from Loki and his Chitauri army, and since then, many new heroes have joined the team. So far, four Avengers movies have been produced by Marvel Studios, producing many quotable lines.

Residing in the light-hearted world of the MCU, the heroes who make up the Avengers - along with the rest of Marvel Studios' heroic cast - have always had a way of capturing the hearts and imaginations of the MCU's audiences, but they've also had quite a way with words. The MCU's superheroes are often inspirational in their world-saving actions, which often translates into some spectacular speeches that remain memorable for years to come. Whether it's the snarky barbs and jabs from Tony Stark or the noble and thought-provoking speeches from Captain America, these heroes know how to make fans laugh, think, and find courage in troubling times.

Tony Stark, The Avengers (2012)

thor iron man and captain america in the avengers

2012's The Avengers marked the first time that all of Marvel Studios' superheroes had come together, but their first interaction was far from friendly. After Iron Man and Captain America had taken Loki captive, Thor took it upon himself to bring justice to his brother, forcing Iron Man and Captain America to intervene. This skirmish began with one of Tony Stark's most memorable lines, as he mocked Thor's clothing by relating his fashion sense to something resembling "Shakespeare in the park." Although the trio would later become firm allies, this little moment of jest - and a showing-off of powers - was a great way to introduce the future Avengers.

19 "Language!"

Steve Rogers, Avengers: Age Of Ultron (2015)

captain america saying language in the avengers

Despite modernizing drastically following his reawakening at the end of Captain America: The First Avenger, Steve Rogers often made it very clear that he was a man out of time. This became very apparent in the opening moments of Avengers: Age of Ultron, which saw Rogers scorn Tony Stark for cursing during the battle against HYDRA in Sokovia, with a simple exclamation of "language!" This moment became a running joke throughout Avengers: Age of Ultron, and was even called back to in Avengers: Endgame, when Rogers himself swears during a fight with his 2012 variant.

18 "Is That The Best You Can Do?"

Thor, Avengers: Age Of Ultron (2015)

the avengers battling ultron in avengers age of ultron

Marvel Studios really leaned into Thor's comedic side during 2017's Thor: Ragnarok, revitalizing the character with a more humorous edge, but that doesn't mean he didn't have some funny lines prior to Taika Waititi's MCU debut. Avengers: Age of Ultron saw the Avengers take on Ultron and his army of drones in Sokovia, and while he thought the battle was in their favor, Thor goaded Ultron by exclaiming, "is that the best you can do?" Ultron proceeded to show just how massive his army was, which, while intimidating the Avengers for a moment, were no match for the superheroes' combined might.

17 "You Could Never Hurt Me. I Just Feel You."

Vision, Avengers: Infinity War (2018)

vision in avengers infinity war

Avengers: Infinity War was a very emotional journey for every hero, but perhaps Vision and Wanda Maximoff had the most tragic storyline - at least until Thanos snapped his fingers. Realizing the only way to stop Thanos from getting all six Infinity Stones was to destroy the Mind Stone in his forehead, Vision begged Wanda to do the deed, ending his life but thwarting Thanos. This line called back to a tender moment the pair shared in a hotel room earlier on, before their lives were uprooted. Unfortunately, Wanda's success at destroying the Mind Stone did nothing to stop the Mad Titan, meaning she killed her love for nothing.

16 "Puny God."

Hulk, The Avengers (2012)

hulk saying puny god in the avengers

After apparently dying in 2011's Thor, The Avengers saw Loki return as the titular team's first antagonist, though he seemed to pose very little threat to the team. During an interaction between Loki and the Hulk in Stark Tower, the God of Mischief falls into a supervillain stereotype and starts to monologue, but the Hulk doesn't have time for that. Smashing Loki into the floor repeatedly incapacitates the villain before the Hulk remarks that he's nothing more than a "puny god." Loki hilariously called back to this moment in Thor: Ragnarok, when Thor sees the same treatment at the hands of the Hulk.

15 "I Love You 3000."

Tony Stark, Avengers: Endgame (2019)

tony stark i love you 3000 speech in avengers endgame

Concluding the MCU's Infinity Saga (except for Spider-Man: Far From Home acting as an epilogue), Avengers: Endgame brought an end to the story of the original six Avengers. This most notably saw the deaths of Iron Man and Black Widow and the retirement of Captain America, but not before they delivered some emotional quotes that are difficult to forget. One of the most memorable was a line shared between Stark and his daughter, Morgan. It's initially the latter who says she loves her father "3000," and Stark calls back to this in his final recorded speech at his funeral, locking eyes with his daughter to proclaim, "I love you 3000."

14 "I Understood That Reference."

Steve Rogers, The Avengers (2012)

steve rogers understood that reference in the avengers

Marvel Studios' Avengers franchise is packed full of serious and inspiring moments, but there is also a lot of fun and wit, and Steve Rogers brings one of these moments in 2012's The Avengers. Being taken from the 1940s, Rogers often misses references made by other members of the team, so when Nick Fury mentions that Loki had been turning people into his "personal flying monkeys," Steve is excited to finally understand a reference. The line references The Wizard of Oz, a book released in 1900, with a 1939 film adaptation starring Judy Garland that featured flying monkeys working for the Wicked Witch.

13 "If You Step Out That Door, You Are An Avenger."

Clint Barton, Avengers: Age Of Ultron (2015)

hawkeye and scarlet witch in avengers age of ultron

Following The Avengers, Marvel Studios came under scrutiny for wasting Jeremy Renner's character, Clint Barton, a.k.a. Hawkeye, so Avengers: Age of Ultron made huge strides into developing him further. Age of Ultron not only introduced Hawkeye's family to the MCU but also saw Barton receive some brilliant moments of dialogue, including one in which he laments how weird their flying-Sokovia situation is. He states to Wanda Maximoff that, if she joins them in their fight, she's an Avenger. Wanda would go on to become one of the most powerful characters in the MCU, surely helped along by Hawkeye's inspirational speech.

12 "Because We'll Need Them To."

Nick Fury, The Avengers (2012)

nick fury discussing the avengers in the avengers

Despite battling together and saving the world in The Avengers, the titular team seemed to go their separate ways at the end of the film, and their future was left uncertain. However, Nick Fury and Maria Hill shared a moment aboard the SHIELD helicarrier that filled the MCU's audiences with hope that the Avengers would return. When Hill questions Fury about how he can be sure they'll come together again, Fury simply states, "because we'll need them to," proving his faith in the team he was so pivotal in bringing together. He wasn't wrong, either, as the Avengers joined forces only three years later and would eventually save the entire universe.

11 "I Am Steve Rogers."

Steve Rogers, Avengers: Infinity War (2018)

i am steve rogers in avengers infinity war

The majority of Avengers: Infinity War consisted of high-octane and tense action sequences as the Avengers and the Guardians of the Galaxy tried to stop Thanos from collecting all six Infinity Stones. However, space was saved for moments of comedy, which helped lighten the mood, and one of the best moments was shared between an unlikely pairing. Meeting for the first time on the Wakandan battlefield, Thor introduces Captain America to his new friend, "tree," to which Groot obviously adds, "I am Groot." In an unexpected moment of understanding, Captain America replies with "I am Steve Rogers," introducing himself to the talking tree, despite probably being pretty confused.

10 "You Get Hurt, Hurt 'Em Back. You Get Killed, Walk It Off."

Steve Rogers, Avengers: Age Of Ultron (2015)

captain america in avengers age of ultron

Avengers: Age of Ultron is widely regarded as the weakest of the MCU's four Avengers movies, but there were plenty of brilliant moments in the smaller-scale Avengers story. During the battle against Ultron's drones in Sokovia, Steve Rogers, now fully embracing his leadership role of the Avengers, states to his team that if they get hurt, "hurt 'em back," and if they get killed, they should simply "walk it off." This line would carry a heavy and emotional meaning only a few moments later, as Quicksilver is killed by Ultron while protecting Hawkeye and a Sokovian child.

9 "We're In The Endgame Now"

Stephen Strange, Avengers: Infinity War (2018)

doctor strange in the endgame in avengers infinity war

When Avengers: Infinity War released in 2018, audiences knew there would be a follow-up, but the sequel's name hadn't yet been revealed. Eventually, the sequel was confirmed to be Avengers: Endgame, which many would have remembered as a call back to Doctor Strange's tragic line in Infinity War. After handing the Time Stone to Thanos on Titan, Doctor Strange mentions that they're "in the endgame now" to an injured Iron Man. Earlier on, Strange had witnessed over 14 million possible futures, only seeing one in which Earth's Mightiest Heroes won against the Mad Titan, though this would eventually lead to Tony Stark's emotional death.

8 "Genius, Billionaire, Playboy, Philanthropist."

Tony Stark, The Avengers (2012)

genius billionaire playboy philanthropist in the avengers

During his first few projects, comparisons were often made between the MCU's Tony Stark, a.k.a. Iron Man, and DC's Bruce Wayne, a.k.a. Batman, as both are heroes who have no special abilities other than their wealth and advanced technology. However, while Batman has regularly been depicted as a darker hero, Iron Man constantly delivers sarcastic quips and even jokes about how rich he actually is. When questioned about what kind of hero he is without his suit of armor in The Avengers, Stark delivers this quote, summing himself up in four words. Luckily for him, he proved he was worth far more than just being a rich and arrogant businessman.

7 "Then We'll Do That Together, Too."

Steve Rogers, Avengers: Age Of Ultron (2015)

steve rogers lose together speech in avengers age of ultron

In the lead-up to Phase 3's Captain America: Civil War, Avengers: Age of Ultron started to show cracks forming within the ranks of the Avengers, exacerbated by each member's huge ego - though Tony Stark had the biggest. When Stark suggests he made Ultron to try and stop extraterrestrial threats - providing the MCU's first mention of the word "endgame" - Rogers replies that they'll beat them together. Although Stark suggests they'll lose, Rogers mentions that they'll "do that together to," which, unfortunately, in Avengers: Infinity War, they don't, and this line is used by Stark in Avengers: Endgame to prove how wrong the other Avengers were.

6 "I Can Do This All Day."

Steve Rogers, Avengers: Endgame (2019)

captain america can do this all day in avengers endgame

Although the MCU's Captain America became synonymous with the line, "I can do this all day," Avengers: Endgame delivers the most poignant and hilarious version of the quote. First spoken in Captain America: The First Avenger, and even said by Rogers to Iron Man in Captain America: Civil War, Avengers: Endgame saw Captain America battle himself during the Avengers' Time Heist. Rogers' 2012 variant says this iconic line, to which the present-day Rogers replies with a jokey, "I know, I know." Not only is this a funny exchange between the two Captain Americas, but it also shows just how far the present Steve Rogers has come.

5 "This Is The Fight Of Our Lives. And We're Going To Win. Whatever It Takes."

Steve Rogers, Avengers: Endgame (2019)

captain america whatever it takes speech in avengers endgame

Setting out on the Time Heist was a daunting task for the Avengers in Endgame, as they had no idea what would be waiting for them in the past. However, Earth's Mightiest Heroes could always depend on Captain America to give them a motivational speech before each mission, and Endgame's is perhaps the best example of this. As the heroes band together to save the universe, Rogers gives an inspirational pep talk, noting that "this is the fight of [their] lives." He fills his team with confidence and even proves how far he will go to save his friends, suggesting they'll do "whatever it takes."

4 "If We Can't Protect The Earth, You Can Be Damn Well Sure We'll Avenge it."

Tony Stark, The Avengers (2012)

tony stark making a drink in the avengers

Before the Battle of New York really kicks off in The Avengers, Tony Stark shares a moment with Loki in his newly-built Stark Tower. Though the team had some teething issues, this moment proved that they were still quick to band together to fight a common cause, as Stark suggests to Loki, "if we can't protect the Earth, you can be damn well sure we'll avenge it," naming his team the Avengers. This is an incredibly memorable line in The Avengers and one that set the tone for subsequent MCU projects for years to come, as the franchise's heroes take pride in being a part of the Avengers.

3 "There Was An Idea... To Bring Together A Group Of Remarkable People To See If They Could Become Something More."

Nick Fury, The Avengers (2012)

nick fury there was an idea speech in the avengers

This line, spoken by Nick Fury in The Avengers, is often credited with encouraging the Avengers to finally come together, despite a few false starts in the MCU's first crossover event. Fury suggesting that the Avengers Initiative had been brewing for a while, intent on bringing together remarkable people and turning them into superheroes, and Phil Coulson's death at the hands of Loki, was enough to convince the Avengers that their combined might and expertise would be far more formidable than if they'd worked alone. Even though they still saw solo adventures after The Avengers, these heroes never worked better than when they worked together.

2 "Avengers! Assemble."

Steve Rogers, Avengers: Endgame (2019)

Avengers: Endgame brought an end to the MCU's Infinity Saga, a story that had been unfolding for over a decade, and the film finally delivered on this teased line that had been building up since 2012's The Avengers. Captain America initially looked to be facing Thanos and his army on the battlefield alone, but when the MCU's heroes returned, some returning from the dead after being snapped away five years earlier, he finally had the opportunity to speak these iconic words. "Avengers! Assemble" was finally brought to life in epic fashion, leading to the heroes charging on Thanos' army and eventually defeating the Mad Titan.

1 "I Am Iron Man"

Tony Stark, Avengers: Endgame (2019)

iron man snapping fingers in avengers endgame

Calling back to the final moments of the MCU's first project, 2008's Iron Man, Tony Stark sacrificed himself in Avengers: Endgame by retorting to Thanos' "I am inevitable" speech with a simple "and I am Iron Man." Although Stark tragically passed away due to his use of the Infinity Stones, this line provided him with the perfect ending, being able to lay down his own life to save his family and the entire universe. Iron Man was the hero to start it all and the one to put an end to Thanos' conquest, proving once-and-for-all that he was an incredibly valuable member of the MCU's Avengers.
