The Circle (2017) - 5.3 - Stream On Tubi TV

John Boyega walking with Emma Watson in The Circle

While it’s far from a quality social networking movie, The Circle does have an impressive cast comprising Boyega, Emma Watson, Karen Gilan, and Tom Hanks. The movie is about the dangers of the boom in social media usage, as The Circle employee Mae Holland becomes the first person to have her life followed throughout the day.

Boyega appears as The Circle’s social network creator Ty Lafitte, in charge of running the service known as TrueYou. Ty recognizes the negative impact of zero privacy and tries to warn Mae. The Circle wasn’t a hit with critics or viewers due to the bizarre premise that never dedicates itself fully to the questionable ethics, with Boyega’s character dropping out of focus halfway through.

John Boyega as Jaeger Pilot in Pacific Rim Uprising

John Boyega headlined one of the notable American Kaiju movies of recent times with this film. It follows the son of the previous film’s protagonist, who goes up against the giant sea monsters threatening the world in order to live up to his father’s legacy.

There weren’t too many good reviews for Pacific Rim: Uprising due to the rather one-dimensional nature of the scenes where everything was largely about the massive beings fighting one another. John Boyega delivered a committed performance with what he had and put on a maverick-style persona for his character.

Imperial Dreams was another test for John Boyega’s acting abilities, with the young actor playing a 21-year-old reformed gangster. The story sees the protagonist’s attempts to go straight after his release but is bogged down by unfair racial profiling and the stigma surrounding former convicts.

Following Boyega’s contrasting performance in Attack the Block, Imperial Dreams cemented him as an up-and-coming actor who could wow in various roles. The movie was positively received for the mature message it sought to send and is a worthy entry in the drama genre.
