With its huge array of futuristic gizmos, 1989's Back To The Future Part II presents a much more exciting version of 2015 than modern audiences know. The sequel's then-future year is a bright and vibrant world of technological wonder, boasting some of sci-fi's best pieces of technology.

Whilst a few of the movie's creations have since become a reality, there are still many inventions featured in the film that continue to impress viewers to this date. These inventions are among some of the franchise's finest, as they neatly demonstrate the creative mindsets of the series' creators, Robert Zemeckis and Bob Gale.

The Auto-Drying Jacket

Wet clothes are never much fun, but thankfully Back To The Future Part II poses a solution to this often irritating problem. Doc provides Marty with this item of clothing so that he can masquerade as his future son Marty McFly Jnr, and it makes for one of the franchise's most charming creations.

As well as being able to dry itself, the auto-drying jacket also possesses the ability to adjust its size to the wearer. The tasks can be performed by pressing a button near the zip, with both functions taking only five seconds to complete. It's a remarkable piece of technology and one that absolutely needs to exist.

The Master-Cook

Acting as a multi-purpose cooking device, the Master-Cook can be glimpsed in the McFly household's kitchen. The appliance is mounted to a wall and contains a visual display alongside some mechanical arms. Its classy white design and bright electronic interface make it truly stand out, despite only making a brief appearance in a scene featuring the 2015 versions of Marty and his mother, Lorraine.

This technological creation makes culinary activities much easier for residents of 2015 Hill Valley. The Master-Cook is capable of not only displaying recipes but also preparing and cooking meals. As a particularly useful household item, the Master-Cook alleviates the stress of mealtimes considerably for individuals living in this time period.

Self-Tying Shoes

Considered by moviegoers to be one of Hollywood's most iconic shoes, Back To The Future Part II's self-tying shoes are a particularly memorable creation. These shoes are worn by Marty in the sci-fi sequel and are easily one of the most memorable aspects of this Back To The Future installment.

In the movie version of 2015, the self-tying shoes are manufactured by Nike. By pressing a button on the side of the sneaker, these shoes' laces tie themselves without the need for any human assistance. The footwear's appeal has transcended the big screen, with Nike having released a real-life version of these sneakers for a limited time in 2016.

Scene Screens

A change of scenery can often provide a relaxing experience, but this usually requires an individual to travel outside of their local area. Fortunately, Back To The Future Part II provides an effective solution, with its "scene screens." This novel gizmo can be seen in the McFly household in a scene that sees Marty's mother, Lorraine, arrive at the family home.

Scene screens are operated via remote control and offer numerous scenic views which can be displayed over window panes. These settings can be accessed through the Scenery Channel, and options include tropical islands, mountain landscapes, and night-time city views. The potential of this technology is huge, as it allows users to experience exotic locations without ever leaving the home.

Automatic Dog Walkers

Dog walking can prove tricky for those in employment, with their work duties limiting the time they can spend with their pooches. The 2015 version of Hill Valley has managed to solve this problem, however, with their automatic dog walkers. These drones are spotted by Marty whilst attempting to rescue his girlfriend, Jennifer, from the McFlys' future household.

These remarkable creations are among the best inventions the sci-fi sequel has to offer. The drones operate autonomously, as they lead their canine companions on a gentle stroll around Hill Valley. Resembling a tiny UFO, the automatic dog walkers are truly a sight to behold and are easily one of the movie's coolest gizmos.

Hoverboards

A particularly popular method of transportation in Back To The Future Part II is the hoverboard, a device that is also responsible for one of Marty's greatest moments in the Back to the Future movies. These hoverboards take the form of skateboards without wheels, floating softly above the ground. But like skateboards, they require a certain degree of momentum from the user in order to achieve their full effect.

Whilst many companies have released their own version of the hoverboard, in Hill Valley's 2015, the most popular model comes from the toy company Mattel. Mattel's hoverboard features a removable handlebar and foot strap in order to make it accessible to younger children. This model has a snazzy pink and yellow design, which allows it to truly stand out against its rivals on the market.

The Binocular Card

One of the smallest inventions featured within Back To The Future Part II is the binocular card. The card is used by Doc Brown to spy on Marty McFly Jr. in 2015 Hill Valley, and the gadget's minuscule appearance makes it perfect for those who wish to snoop on others unnoticed. The device is also surprisingly thin, despite the immense amount of technology contained inside.

The binocular cards give its user the ability to zoom in on unsuspecting individuals, much like a standard binocular. Owners of these cards can also take pictures, with the rather unique digital binoculars allowing the user to adjust the zoom and focus levels of the image. Seeing this tiny contraption being capable of generating such powerful images is truly impressive to witness.

Flying Cars

One of the most tantalizing prospects in regards to future technology is the notion of a flying car. These airborne automobiles frequently appear on prediction lists for the years ahead, proving to be an exciting concept for many. Flying cars feature heavily in Back To The Future Part II, most notably in the form of Doc's trusty Delorean, which transports the eccentric inventor and his friend Marty to 2015 Hill Valley.

Whilst the movie may have been wrong about these aerial vehicles existing in 2015, their inclusion makes for one of the coolest inventions in the film. These automobiles often take the form of land vehicles converted to hover above the ground, but more recent models, such as the Jeep Wrangler YJ, have flying capabilities already built in. Owners of these futuristic cars drive through a grand skyway, with various signs and lane markers hovering in the air around them, as they glide through the sky towards their destination.

Mr. Fusion

Carrying a similar appearance to that of a coffee grinder, the Mr. Fusion Home Energy Reactor is an especially iconic invention from the movie. Manufactured by Fusion Industries, it provides a vital power source for one of the best movie cars, as Doc fixes the contraption to his beloved Delorean.

This energy reactor offers a more environmentally friendly solution to car owners, who may otherwise opt for non-renewable sources, such as petrol or diesel. The Mr. Fusion device converts household waste into renewable energy, allowing Doc to use a more sustainable fuel alternative for his Delorean. It's an effective means of reducing carbon emissions, by recycling trash that would otherwise be thrown away.

Holo-Films

3D movies have captivated audiences across many generations, but an advancement in this technology is teased in Back To The Future Part II. As Marty explores 2015 Hill Valley, he passes a theater named the "Holomax." This entertainment venue shows various holographic movies, which are designed to create an immersive experience through the use of hologram technology.

Whilst the holo-films themselves are not shown in the movie, audiences are given a glimpse at the holographic effects involved. As Marty passes the Holomax, the theatre projects a hologram of a shark, which proceeds to eat the high school teen. It's an impressive display of tech, which promises to offer quite a spectacle for moviegoing audiences.
