It may be Obi-Wan Kenobi's story that's keeping fans invested in the new Disney+ series, but fans have also noticed another Star Wars tradition the series has brought back - amazing roasts, of one kind or another. Of course, this is nothing new in a series that has long used its unique dialogue style for some incredible putdowns.

With 9 mainline movies and a couple of spin-off features, there are a lot of insults to decide between. Luckily, the Star Wars fans of Ranker are always up for a challenge.

Note: Ranker lists are live and continue to accrue votes, so some rankings may have changed after this publishing.

Han Solo

"A Jedi Knight? Jeez, I'm Out Of It For A Little While, Everyone Gets Delusions Of Grandeur!"

Han Solo after being unfrozen in Star Wars Return of the Jedi

The speed with which Han Solo managed to get his sharp wit back after spending so long frozen in carbonite is a big part of what makes this insult so great. Still struggling to see and make sense of his situation early on in Return of the Jedi, Han still puts out one of the funniest retorts in the series.

Of course, Luke does live up to the title after a fashion but that doesn't make Han's insult any less perfect. Striding confidently into Jabba's Palace dressed in black only to be captured shortly after, the audience could understand the smuggler's slight lack of confidence in Luke.

Princess Leia

"I'd Just As Soon Kiss A Wookiee."

Han and Leia arguing on Hoth because Han is leaving in The Empire Strikes Back

The beginning of The Empire Strikes Back marks the return of an old conflict between Han Solo and Princess Leia that produced a bunch of iconic Leia moments and some of the best retorts in the series. With Han once again threatening to leave, Leia asks him to stay this time but insists it's because of his skills in battle rather than any personal feelings.

This sentiment is perfectly encapsulated in her comeback when Han mocks her with the idea she's waiting for a goodbye kiss, as Leia once again expresses how outlandish she finds the idea of being romantically involved with him. Han's follow-up is just as funny but it's Leia's insult that really stuck with fans.

Princess Leia

"Aren't You A Little Short For A Storm Trooper?"

Vivien Lyra Blair nails a bunch of Carrie Fisher trademarks in the Obi-Wan series but the dialogue also does a great job of showing that Leia was never afraid to make personal remarks if they were funny. In this case, it made for one of the most iconic moments in the franchise.

Marking an important reunion between the two children of Anakin, unbeknownst to them, Leia immediately sees through Luke's attempt to disguise himself as an imperial trooper and it happens to be a great putdown too. It may not be a particularly clever insult but often it's the simplest ones that are the most memorable.

Princess Leia

"You Have Your Moments. Not Many Of Them, But You Do Have Them."

Even during the height of the tension between Han and Leia in The Empire Strikes Back, there are times when Leia is forced to admit there is some genius to the scoundrel's ways. One of these times comes after Han successfully hides the Falcon under the nose of a Star Destroyer before floating away with ejected trash.

However, that doesn't mean she has to go all out with the praise, especially given Han's ego. Instead, she includes a light insult along with her praise to ensure he doesn't get too ahead of himself. This line highlights what's great about their relationship, including the sharp back-and-forths that won over a lot of fans.

Princess Leia

"You Came In That Thing? You're Braver Than I Thought."

Han and Leia on the Death Star

One of the themes of Star Wars Episode IV is characters unfamiliar with the Millenium Falcon insulting its shoddy appearance despite Han's outlandish claims of its performance. Whilst Luke's reaction to seeing it at first is also hilarious, the prize has to go to Leia as the group makes their escape from the Death Star.

Having already told them in no uncertain terms what she thought of their dangerous rescue attempt, she was able to reserve some scathing sarcasm for their ship too. Though Leia comes to rely on the Falcon as much as anyone, her reaction is as understandable as it is hilariously provocative towards the ship's owner.

Princess Leia

"Will Someone Get This Big Walking Carpet Out Of My Way?"

Chewbacca, Han, Leia and Luke stand together in Star Wars: A New Hope

Chewbacca is one of the most well-liked characters of the original trilogy with his surprise appearances in the Star Wars prequel trilogy and the sequel trilogy only cementing the Wookiee's fans. The downside of being such a big character is that Chewbacca is very big, and that means he does tend to get in the way sometimes.

An incensed princess Leia is having none of it in A New Hope as the group hurry to make their escape from the Death Star. Not only does she tell Chewbacca to move so she can walk ahead, but she also mocks his shaggy appearance. Luckily, Chewbacca took it on the chin, meaning even the Wookiee's staunchest fans can enjoy this hilarious moment.

Luke Skywalker

"Impressive. Every Word In That Sentence Is Wrong."

Luke holding his lightsaber in Star Wars The Last Jedi

Whilst the sequel trilogy might not have been quite as well represented in the insults department as the original trilogy, that didn't stop Luke Skywalker from dropping one of the funniest lines in Star Wars history in The Last Jedi. Luke had no time for Rey's preconceptions about the Jedi and the force and he had no qualms about telling her as much.

The funniest example of this was the brutal moment when he told the aspiring Jedi that not a single word she'd said had been correct. Whilst Luke's jaded nature in the movie drew a mixed response from fans, no one could deny that moments like this weren't as iconic and funny as any other in the movies.

Princess Leia

"Why You Stuck-Up, Half-Witted, Scruffy-Looking Nerf Herder!"

Han Solo and Leia Organa talk in the hangar on Hoth in Star Wars Empire Strikes Back

Thanks to the friction between Leia and Han, The Empire Strikes Back has more iconic insults than any other movie in the series. The very best came after Han bragged about Leia growing feelings for him and she retorted with perhaps the most quintessentially Star Wars insult there has been.

Whilst Nerf Herder might not be a common term outside of the Star Wars universe, the venom with which Leia spat the word at Han leaves the viewer in no doubt of its implications. An insult that showcased Carrie Fisher at her best, it's easy to see why it remains a fan favorite.

Darth Vader

"He Is As Clumsy As He Is Stupid."

Vader sits in his Meditation Chamber in Star Wars

Darth Vader is a villain that lived up to the hype in a lot of ways but what's often forgotten about the character is that he did have a sharp tongue for those that drew his ire, usually imperial officers that failed to meet his high expectations. Rogue One's "choke on your aspirations" is more of a dad-joke but this line from The Empire Strikes Back is a better effort.

Said in response to Admiral Ozzel unintentionally alerting the rebels on Hoth to the imperial fleet and thus giving them time to prepare an evacuation, Vader's anger is understandable and his phrase provides a neat summary of professional incompetence that anyone can relate to. One of Vader's best lines, it's no surprise the insult was a popular choice.

Qui-Gon Jinn

"The Ability To Speak Does Not Make You Intelligent. Now Get Out Of Here."

Star Wars The Phantom Menace - Jar Jar Binks, Qui-Gon Jinn and Obi Wan-Kenobi

Jar Jar Binks may be an easy target when it comes to insulting the Gungan's intelligence but Qui-Gon manages to phrase it in such a brutally hilarious way that it still ends up being funny. Delivered in response to Jar Jar trying to prove he's not brainless by pointing out his ability to speak, an unimpressed Qui-Gon does his best to make the alien leave him alone.

For fans of The Phantom Menace who didn't appreciate the buffoonish character, Qui-Gon manages to put their thoughts into words but even fans who do like Jar Jar can't help but enjoy the retort. Some lines unite every Star Wars fan and this is definitely one of them.
