There are quite a handful of free streaming services out there for those without Netflix or Hulu access, but one that shamefully goes unrecognized is Tubi. If one can get past the ads, there's actually quite a wealth of movies and shows to enjoy, especially in the horror genre.
The site has an absolute trove of horror movies covering every subgenre imaginable. There are classics like The Texas Chain Saw Massacre but then there are the legions of lesser-known forays into fear. It's this collection where the site truly shines. From ghosts to guts and gore galore, there are plenty of flicks to satisfy the hungriest horror hound.
Clown (2014)
When it comes to grisly good horror, one can never go wrong with Jon Watts' Clown. The Eli Roth-produced movie is a mélange of body-horror, demonic-possession, and monster movie, and it will definitely have some viewers sleeping with the closet light on.
When a man dons a cursed clown suit, he begins changing into a child-eating creature called The Clöyne. It's one thing to fight off an evil monster, but to be helpless while becoming one takes things to a whole new level.
Raw (2016)
Visceral, disturbing, disgusting, and vile, are just a few words used to describe this sickening coming-of-age film. This French horror flick sees a young veterinary student slowly succumb to cannibalism after a gruesome hazing ritual with deadly results.
Needless to say, this movie is not for the faint of heart or weak of stomach. Seeing the vegetarian Justine go from promising student to an insatiable and voracious predator is chilling to say the very least. Watch with caution, and preferably light on fleshy movie snacks.
Vamp (1986)
The '80s was horror's golden age, and Vamp is one of those quirky little films that checks every box that the era had to offer. In this neon-soaked nightmare, a group of college friends mistakenly discover a club full of ravenous vampires.
It can be sleazy, it can be cheesy, it can be drenched with blood and typical vampire motifs, but that just makes Vamp perfect for those looking for a creepy '80s time capsule.
Warlock (1989)
Come to think of it, there aren't really that many horror flicks involving evil wizards. This supernatural horror flick sees Julian Sands in the title role as a 16th-century son of Satan materializing into the modern era with a plot to destroy the world.
With the Warlock on a mission to reform an evil spell book and a witch-hunter well on his trail, there's plenty here for both horror fans and fantasy junkies to enjoy. Tubi even offers the sequels for those wanting more of the sinister spellcaster.
The Bat (1959)
If there's one name all horror fans should know, it's Vincent Price. While he's renowned for films like House on Haunted Hill and The Last Man On Earth, the service offers several other flicks featuring the master of horror.
The Bat feels like a hybrid of film noir and proto-slasher flick, as a mysterious, clawed killer called The Bat uses poison-laced bats to bite his victims. It's everything one could ask for from a black-and-white mystery.
The Raven (1963)
This horror-comedy features a who's who of the genre, featuring not only Vincent Price but Boris Karloff, Peter Lorre, and even a young Jack Nicholson as well. With three horror stars playing a trio of rival wizards, how can things not get a little wild in this castle?
Price, Karloff, and Lorre are the reason to watch this movie, and while the effects and gimmicks are dated, it's still one of the must-watch entries in Roger Corman's Poe Cycle. Even if it does stray miles away from the source material.
The Pit And The Pendulum (1961)
Yet another Price/Poe movie this time with a little more creep than comedy. Inspired by the short story of the same name. The Pit and the Pendulum was one of the most shocking films in Price's lineup and definitely deserves attention today.
A haunted castle, a torture chamber, and ghostly visions are just a few treats this flick has to offer. If Price in the lead role wasn't enough to earn this film a watch, consider the classic horror tropes that continue to remain chilling for modern viewers.
Snow White: A Tale of Terror (1997)
This grim fairytale is a horror-inspired retelling of "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs" featuring a phenomenal performance from Sigourney Weaver as the sinister and seductive Lady Claudia. Vanity can be a powerful motivator, and when black magic and vengeance are thrown in the mix, bodies start to pile up.
It's a unique and gothic approach to the familiar fairytale and one that fans of dark fantasy will definitely appreciate. If not for the horror, at least watch for the performance from its leads and makeup effects.
Dracula (1979)
Frank Langella's Dracula is one of the most underrated versions of the count in the history of the character. Sure, it's a little over the top, but that doesn't mean it's any less entertaining. Highly romanticized, but an underappreciated version of the Stoker novel.
The film follows the gist of the novel pretty well, although some scenes are inverted to make the plot more of a gothic romance, Even so, the film features a star-studded cast and some serious talent for an otherwise standard vampire flick.
The Final (2010)
If there's one teen horror that doesn't get nearly enough attention, but it's readily available on Tubi for absolutely free. When a group of high school outcasts has had enough torture from the hands of their bully tormentors, they enact a bit of well-deserved vigilante vengeance on Halloween night.
The film is both difficult yet satisfying to watch. The bullies deserve every bit of horror they endure, but watching them go through mind games and physical agony can be hard to get through. Either way, it comes highly recommended.
