Guillermo del Toro's films are often, dark, moody, and give off a gothic feel. Most recently, he came out with Nightmare Alley, which received great reviews. Even though he's constantly coming out with new films, there is plenty that he put on hold or stopped working on indefinitely. Plenty of del Toro's unreleased films have intriguing stories, and many fans would love to see them on screen.

Beauty and the Beast

Princess Belle dancing with the Beast.

Emma Watson was originally going to star in Gullermo del Toro's version of Beauty and the Beast, which was supposedly going to be titled Beauty and Beast.

This project was never made because it turned out Disney was also working on the remake. He decided to let it go, and Watson ended up attached to the Disney version instead. While Beauty and the Beast have seen multiple adaptations, del Toro might've been historically accurate to Beauty and the Beast, perhaps and perhaps given it a darker twist. Time has passed since Disney's version was released, so hopefully, he reconsiders this one.

Mephisto's Bridge

Angel of Death from Hellboy.

Mephisto's Bridge was an adaptation of the novel Spanky by Christopher Fowler. Spanky is about a man who makes a deal with a demon named Spanky in order to have a better life.

Given the comedic nature of the novel and del Toro's unique filmmaking style, this could have been the perfect film for him to take on. In fact, he even worked on the script for it and had character designs ready. Instead, he received an offer to make Hellboy II and Mephisto's Bridge ended up never being made. It's been years, but this movie still sounds intriguing and it would be nice to see him revisit those ideas.

At The Mountains Of Madness

At The Mountains of Madness book cover.

At the Mountains of Madness was originally a novel by H.P. Lovecraft that Guillermo del Toro wanted to turn into a movie. This film even had Tom Cruise ready to star, but del Toro wanted an R rating, which the studio didn't like.

It seemed he was very passionate about this one, considering he tried to get it made twice. He even attempted to change its rating to PG-13 to see if that made a difference with the studio. Unfortunately, things didn't work out with this one. Lovecraft is an iconic writer though, it would still be amazing to see del Toro interpret his work.

The List Of Seven

The List of 7 book cover.

The List of Seven is yet another book adaptation that Gullermo del Toro was a part of that never got made. This one was slightly different from his other works, as it was more of a murder mystery based on historical figures.

Had this movie been made, it would have been very different from del Toro's current lineup of films. While it still has the darker themes that are easy to envision del Toro working with, the murder mystery element and lack of fantasy would be entirely different. It would be nice to see Del Toro branch out more, so hopefully, this one isn't completely off the table.

Fantastic Voyage

Scientists inside the human body in the film Fantastic Voyage.

Fantastic Voyage is a film from 1966 about a scientist with a blood clot in his brain. In order to help him out, a group of scientists manages to shrink themselves and enter his body to save his life.

Guillermo del Toro was prepared to remake this movie back in 2017, he even mentioned that they would begin filming in 2018. Considering he was busy during awards season, things didn't go out as planned. Although, the original Fantastic Voyage was pretty successful despite the unusual plot, so it would be interesting if fans were still able to see this one.

The Orphanage

The Orphanage kid.

The Orphanage is a scary Spanish-language horror film that managed to become popular in the states. It follows a young woman who buys the orphanage in which she grew up and turns it into a home for sick children. When her own son disappears there, she begins hearing and seeing spirits who she believes are trying to help her find him.

Guillermo del Toro was actually the producer of The Orphanage, but he wanted to personally write and direct the American remake. While remakes are often never as good as the original, del Toro's connection to the film gave fans high expectations. He also claimed there were some details left out of the original that he wanted to explore in the remake.

Frankenstein

Dr. Frankenstein and his monster.

Frankenstein's story is widely popularized. Everyone knows of the monster that was created by a scientist. What many fans don't know is how Guillermo del Toro would have pinned the story and given it his own creative vision.

Guillermo del Toro is no stranger to dark stories, so his Frankenstein could have been a huge success. Unfortunately, the failure of the Dark Universe films like the Mummy reboot may have completely ruined del Toro's shot at making his Frankenstein film. Hopefully, they still give him a shot at the movie anyway.

Justice League Dark

Justice League Dark would feature many iconic DC characters, such as Swamp Thing, Constantine, and Zatanna. It's no secret that DC has struggled to find its footing when it comes to superhero movies.

Guillermo del Toro often has success with his darker films, such as Hellboy and Pan's Labyrinth. Had he been able to direct Justice League Dark, it could have been exactly what DC needed to differentiate themselves from Marvel. Guillermo had to exit this film due to filming The Shape of Water, but hopefully, he can return to it in the future.

3993

Pan's Labyrinth movie poster.

Along the likes of films like the fantasy war film Pan's Labyrinth and The Devil's Backbone, 3993 would have also taken place during the Spanish civil war. While each film is unrelated, it would have wrapped up the trilogy of sorts. It was revealed that Guillermo del Toro was working on this film back in 2007, but as of late there haven't been any updates.

The other films in the series were Spanish films, and del Toro has seemed to break out into English-language films recently. While his American-set films are amazing, it would be great to see del Toro return to his roots.

Hellboy III

Hellboy smokes a cigar in Hellboy.

Hellboy is one of Guillermo del Toro's biggest movie series, following a supernatural creature from hell who protects Earth. Despite fans pressuring the studio to make Hellboy III, del Toro never got around to it.

While he was certainly working on the movie for some time, he was never able to make the film due to many other projects coming up. According to Guillermo del Toro, Hellboy certainly isn't going to be made, and this is likely due to a lack of funding for the high-budget film.
