The award-winning platformer may have been one of the most challenging and unique video games in recent memory, but it garnered a lot of fans and praise from critics. Studio MDHR has just released the first and, so far, only DLC for Cuphead in the form of The Delicious Last Course.
With a brand new hub location, the inclusion of Ms. Chalice, new levels, and brand new towering bosses to fight, gamers can expect to jump into another tough meal to chew through. If fans are looking for games that can offer the same experiences, fear not, as there are certainly some that might fill your appetite.
Guacamelee!
After their work on the Tales From Space games, Drinkbox Studios' next game would prove to be one of their best: Guacamelee! The players control Juan, who transforms from a humble farmer to a luchadora blessed with mystical powers in order to save the El Presidente's daughter.
While the game plays like a Metroidvania title, its colorful art style and unique visuals make it a stunning game that fans of Cuphead might appreciate. With its focus on co-op multiplayer and challenging foes along the way, there's plenty for anyone who wants more artistry in their games.
Rayman Legends
Originally released in 2013, Rayman Legends has been ported over the years for multiple consoles, re-introducing itself to new audiences as well as platformer fans who may have missed the previous releases. While there hasn't been a brand new mainline Rayman game since its release, this still holds up by many as one of the best in the series.
Its beautiful and vibrant style shines throughout the game, giving the cartoonish nature of the characters extra polish and depth. While it slowly grows tough over the course of the game, it has some very harsh unlockable levels that will test anyone's abilities as a gamer.
The Binding Of Isaac
Created by Edmund McMillen and Florian Himsl, this independent title remains one of the darkest and most disturbing rogue-like games ever created. In order to escape his mother's attempt to murder him, Isaac jumps through a trapdoor to an underground world filled with disturbing monsters.
It may not initially seem like a game that Cuphead fans might enjoy, but it is also a difficult game to complete, especially with multiple DLC and updated versions giving the player more tough enemies and sentient objects to fight. Thanks to the addition of co-op, up to four players can enjoy this tough indy gem.
Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze
Originally released on the Wii U, Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze was ported over to the Switch in 2018, giving this critically praised platform game a second chance. Since then, many have enjoyed what could be one of the best-ranked Donkey Kong games. Developed by Retro Studios, the game offered players many fun levels as Donkey Kong attempts to save his home from the villainous Snowmads.
What makes this different compared to other Nintendo platform titles in recent memory is the challenge to complete the game. Even if you play with a friend with their choice between five unique apes, it's one of the toughest to get one hundred percent that those who like hard games will enjoy.
Contra
Developed by Konami in 1987 for arcades before it eventually made its way to the NES in 1988, Contra was one of the best titles they made for Nintendo's console back in the '80s. Commandos Lance Bean and Bill Rizer must fight against the Red Falcon Organisation to save the Earth from destruction.
With its focus on solo and multiplayer options, anyone can jump into the game with its run-and-gun gameplay. It has inspired many games that followed it and for those that enjoy the gameplay of Cuphead, fans should check out Contra and how it inspired it.
Furi
Released in 2016 for PC, the PS4, and Xbox One consoles before making its way to the Switch in 2018, the players will attempt to get The Stranger free from a prison made up of ten islands, each one the home to a boss that they must fight through. Blending swordplay as well as some shooting mechanics, each one will test the might of anyone holding the controller.
Furi is not like most games as it focuses purely on boss battles. But despite this approach, each one is unique and is more challenging than the last that some fans of the best boss fights in Cuphead might be interested in.
Ori And The Blind Forest
Another Metroidvania, Ori and the Blind Forest was one of the standout titles published by Microsoft Studios as it was one of the best games of 2015. After an event nearly wipes out the forest, it's up to Ori to try and restore it to how it once was while also avoiding the clutches of Kuro.
This is regarded by many as one of the most artistically gorgeous within the Metroidvania genre, embracing its unique look and world to fit within the gameplay. These same qualities can be found in Cuphead too, making this a sought-after game for those that enjoy titles that can give them more visual flair.
Ender Lillies: Quietus Of The Knights
Released last year, Ender Lillies followed the tradition of the Souls-like games that have been popular in recent years that have become some of the most unique games that defied the genre: all the enemies are very difficult; a dark force has transformed everyone into evil monsters, and it takes place in a ruined location. It's up to a priestess named Lily to save the day while also using the assistance of the spirits of those she fought to aid her.
Its difficulty will undoubtedly interest anyone who played a FromSoftware game, but Cuphead players will find it a refreshing game to test their skills. Furthermore, the dark story and character designs will also please the eyes too as this too helps to make it stand out from the crowd.
Dead Cells
When it was released in 2018, Dead Cells became one of the best games for many in the year as it blended rogue-like and Metroidvania gameplay to create a unique experience. Controlling the Prisoner, the player must guide them through a diseased island and kill the King to reclaim their freedom.
With many deadly enemies who can easily kill you as you can kill them, it also sees many power-ups that can assist you in combat. Cuphead features a similar mechanic. This combination might be enough to intrigue fans to pick up this game and see why it resonated with so many people and why it's one of Metacritics' best-ranked modern Metroidvania games.
Hollow Knight
Developed by Team Cherry, Hollow Knight saw the title character explore the underground world of Hallownest and try to discover what happened to the citizens of the kingdom. Its popularity was enough to see a sequel game titled Silk Song, which is set to be released soon.
Featuring difficult bosses, a beautiful art style, and fun and fluid gameplay, this is easily one that Cuphead fans will enjoy from start to finish.
