There have been countless fantastic films released in the last five years including some already iconic entries in the comedy genre. Comedy films tend to mesh with another genre and this mix can be successful and inventive with a nice balance between the genres or it can be a redundant entry in the genre.

Action, mystery, period dramas, and romance all have proven that they work well with the comedy genre and there's still room to be original. Here are some of the most inventive, creative, hilarious, and enjoyable comedies that were released in the last five years.

Knives Out (2019)

Knives Out is a fast-paced comedic mystery film that follows a quirky and brilliant Detective Blanc (Daniel Craig) as he is suspiciously hired to solve a murder that at first glance looks to be a suicide. Blanc quickly realizes that the family is full of suspicious people and any one of them could have been involved in the family patriarch's death. The film brilliantly balances mystery and comedy with biting social commentary making it a fantastic watch.

Deadpool (2016)

Ryan Reynold's second attempt at portraying the "Merc with a Mouth" was a surprise success and a beloved rendition of the character. The R rated film brings violence and gore, but the characters, led by Wade Wilson, bring sarcasm to every scene of the well-paced film. The film uses different types of comedy throughout; deadpan, puns, meta, and is subdued while also having moments of being over-the-top. It's a well-balanced comedy-action film and its sequel was just as successful.

The Big Sick (2017)

The Big Sick is based on Kumail Nanjiani's real-life relationship with Emily Gordon (portrayed by Zoe Kazan) as they begin dating with a major culture clash between themselves and their families with Nanjiani being Pakistani-born and Gordon white and American-born.

Although the film deals with serious subjects as Gordon becomes seriously ill and Nanjiani has to confront his true feelings and face both of their parents, the film is surprisingly humorous among the grief.

Game Night (2018)

Jason Bateman and Rachel McAdams star in this game night gone wrong film that surprises as a smart and hilarious comedy. The characters begin thinking they're a part of a game night kidnapping mystery, but it turns out it's all real and they have to survive the night. The action-comedy is stylized with polished cinematography that isn't always typical for the genre and every character is utilized in the plot and comedy.

Booksmart (2019)

Booksmart follows two best friends (Kaitlyn Dever and Beanie Feldstein) who realize that they've wasted their high school years by only focusing on academics and decide that they need to go out on a wild adventure of parties and mischief before going to college. The directorial debut of Olivia Wilde is a successful and hilarious character study of modern high schoolers.

The Nice Guys (2016)

The Nice Guys was a film set in 1970s Los Angeles and follows two private investigators (Ryan Gosling and Russell Crowe) reluctantly team up while looking into the murder of a porn star. The two uncover a far-reaching conspiracy involving the automobile industry as they get closer to solving the mystery. The laughs come from Ryan Gosling and Russell Crowe's chemistry and the increasingly hilarious situations the two get themselves into.

Hunt For The Wilderpeople (2016)

Taika Waititi has found great success as a director including Jojo Rabbit and What We Do in the Shadows and all of his films have the same type of comedy throughout. Although all of his films are hilarious in their own right, Hunt for the Wilderpeople is one of his most hilarious and heartfelt films.

Hunt for the Wilderpeople follows a young boy (Julian Dennison) and his turbulent life through the child welfare system before finally finding some peace with a new family in the country near the outskirts of the New Zealand bush. Tragedy ensues causing the boy and his foster uncle (Sam Neill) to escape into the bush on the run.

Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse (2018)

This beautifully animated film follows a young Miles Morales who is bitten by a radioactive spider and suddenly gets superpowers similar to the friendly neighborhood Spider-Man. The verses collide when several incarnations of Spider-Man are pulled into Miles' world and the team must work together to defeat the villainous King Pin. It's a quick-paced comedy-action with a great uplifting message and a lot of heart.

Love, Simon (2018)

Love, Simon follows high schooler Simon Spier as he tries to figure out how best to tell his family and friends that he's gay. Things become complicated and exciting when Simon starts to talk to an anonymous student at school and begins to fall for the classmate and constantly wonders who the other guy, who only goes by Blue, could be. It's a fun and heartfelt coming-of-age romance that also has some more serious moments throughout.

The Personal History Of David Copperfield (2019)

Dev Patel stars in Armando Iannucci's Charles Dickens adaptation that follows the fantastical world of David Copperfield. The fictional Copperfield becomes an author and tells the story of his life from financial and familial hardships to his eventual happiness and success. The film is escapism at its best and a delightful watch that balances comedy, romance, and the period drama well.
