Blumhouse Productions has been cranking out box-office hits for years, with four new film coming out in 2022. Some of the studio's products are worth the hype that is inevitably attached to them, while others don't quite live up to expectations. Almost every film that leaves Blumhouse maintains its popularity, with some movies, such as Get Out and Us, becoming groundbreaking reinventions of the horror genre.

Known mostly for horror but specializing in striking drama, Blumhouse Productions has released films that have received very high ratings on Rotten Tomatoes. Although there have been some flops, several Blumhouse movies from the 2010s have made lasting impressions, and the patented Tomatometer deems them worthy of watching.

Creep (2014) - 90%

Although it is a low-budget film, Creep delivers an fresh take on found-footage films. Unlike other found-footage films, Creep is both scripted and improvised by the writers and actors, Patrick Brice and Mark Duplass.

The plot follows a young videographer, Aaron (Brice), looking for quick money, leading him to answer an online ad to record the final message of an eccentric, dying man named Josef (Duplass). With its uneasy suspense, unsettling humor, and complex characters, Creep earned a rating of 90% on Rotten Tomatoes.

The Gift (2015) - 91%

Multi-layered and character-driven, The Gift is a psychological thriller from Blumhouse. The movie is about a couple who starts receiving "gifts" from the husband's old acquaintance, causing the wife to question who her husband truly is.

All of this builds to reveal a horrifying and harrowing secret. The disturbing twist combined with the chilling suspense marks this film as a commendable directorial debut from Joel Edgerton that earned a rating of 91% on Rotten Tomatoes.

Sweetheart (2019) - 93%

Admired for its cinematography and portrayal of the complexities of race and class, the movie has a Rotten Tomatoes rating of 93%.

Hush (2016) - 93%

Blumhouse's horror movie, Hush, puts a twist on typical scary movie tropes. This cat-and-mouse survival story focuses on a deaf-mute woman facing a masked killer who breaks into her home. Given the unique spin on the classic horror plot, most of the movie is silent, with less than 15 minutes of dialogue as viewers experience climactic moments from the main character's perspective. Praised for its creepy atmosphere and heart-racing suspense, Hush is currently sitting at 93% on Rotten Tomatoes.

Us (2019) - 93%

Jordan Peele's second horror movie, Us, is just as ambitious and poignant as Get Out. While it implements more sci-fi elements than psychological thrills, it is another social commentary on race and humanity. The story revolves around a family that encounters four masked strangers, with each one revealed to have the same appearance as them, and it features some of the weirdest moments in Blumhouse horror movies. Considered one of the best Netflix original horror films, Cam is a psychological horror about an online cam girl, Alice, who has her online account and identity stolen by a doppelgänger. In her effort to confront her imposter, she becomes entangled in a mystery about the other cam girls from the site. The thriller acts as a cautionary tale and modern approach to the mistaken identity trope. The visual complexity and film techniques of this twisty horror helped Cam earn its 93% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

Whiplash (2014) - 94%

While not a horror like most movies that come from Blumhouse, Whiplash is intense and gripping. The drama is centered around an ambitious young drummer who aims to be at the top of his elite music academy. As he strives for perfection, his passion borders on obsession as he is pushed by a volatile and cutthroat instructor. BlacKkKlansman (2018) - 96%

Part comedy, part action flick, Spike Lee's BlacKkKlansman is another not-so-scary yet still riviting movie from Blumhouse. It tells the true story of Ron Stallworth, the first Black detective in the Colorado Spring Police Detpartment, who infiltrates the Ku Klux Klan. Nominated for a bevy of awards including six Oscars, BlacKkKlansman's depiction of race relations 1970s America tells a unique, strange and thought-provoking story that earned it a 96% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

Get Out (2017) - 98%

Jordan Peele's debut movie, Get Out, is acclaimed for its groundbreaking approach to horror. Like its predecessor, Creep 2 received plenty of praise. In this sequel, Mark Duplass reprises his role as the antagonist. The sequel focuses again on Josef (Duplass), who has taken the name of the victim in Creep, as he pursues his next target: a Youtuber, Sara. When he propositions Sara to record his life documentary, she accepts, thinking it will boost her fanbase and not understanding the danger in front of her. While many sequels get mixed reviews, Creep 2 has a rare 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
