The Avengers were created as a way to unite some of the heroes in Marvel comics and became the most exciting thing to read for so many fans. As the team expanded and gained popularity, many members joined, the team disbanded, reunited, and members were lost but the stories always remained intriguing
Some of the biggest Avengers storylines have been adapted into films, such as Civil War and the Age of Ultron. Other than the comics the MCU has brought to the attention of fans, there are many Avengers comics that have greatly impacted the Avengers story in comics and are what made them one of the biggest superhero teams. Fans on Ranker have picked the best.
Avengers Forever
Avengers Forever puts Goliath, Iron Man, Scarlet Witch, She-Hulk, Warbird, and Wasp front and center as the team deals with time travel and brings in Avengers from different timelines to fight alongside each other.
Avengers Forever follows the team trying to save Rick Jones from being killed by Immortus. Rick Jones used his powers to bring Avengers from different timelines to help save him, which made for an enjoyably chaotic story that wrapped up well in the end. Even though this plot might be confusing for new readers, it's a classic story the MCU could certainly adapt.
The New Avengers: Breakout
After Scarlet Witch lost her mind and killed Ant-Man and Hawkeye, the Avengers disbanded for years. In New Avengers: Breakout, a new threat arose and Captain America decided its time for the team to reunite.
Avengers: Disassembled and Breakout are some of the best comics to read before Multiverse of Madness, due to Scarlet Witch's heavy influence. Breakout is also the comic that introduced Spider-Man and Wolverine to the Avengers, which was controversial since they've expressed not wanting to be part of the team before.
The Korvac Saga
When Korvac the Machine Man planned on taking over the cosmos, he found himself having to avoid the Guardians of the Galaxy and ended up running through time to escape and succeed. Eventually, he grabbed the attention of the Avengers, which decided to take matters into their own hands.
The Korvac Saga is interesting for the way it intertwined Guardians of the Galaxy and the Avengers and gave them a shared villain. It also starts out with Thor fighting alongside the Guardians, and due to Thor's ties to the Guardians in the MCU, this is a battle that fans might possibly see on-screen one day.
The Kang Dynasty
The Kang Dynasty follows Kang's return as he plans to take over the world yet again. Of course, the Avengers can't let this happen, so Scarlet Witch, Vision, Thor, Captain America, and Captain Marvel team up to put a stop to him.
Avengers have fought Kang plenty of times, but the Kang Dynasty is one of the most popular stories featuring the villain. The Kang Dynasty is a massive 15-part story that wrapped up Kurt Busiek's run on The Avengers. Considering Kang will show up in the MCU once again in Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, and is expected to be the next big bad villain in the MCU following Thanos, this is required reading for MCU fans.
Avengers #1
The Avengers #1 is the comic that introduced the Avengers to readers back in the 1960s. This story follows Thor, Iron Man, Hulk, Ant-Man, and the Wasp as they realize they're stronger together when Loki plans to trap his brother Thor.
While some fans may have problems with the MCU's comic accuracy, it was very fitting that Loki was the Avenger's first villain, considering that's also how things went down in the comics. It's not surprising that Avengers #1 is one of the best Avengers comics, with this story being one of the most memorable and giving the team a worthy villain that later becomes an iconic character.
Avengers: Ultron Unlimited
Ultron was previously created by Dr. Hank Pym, but the Avengers have taken care of him before. In Ultron Unlimited, Ultron returns and appears to be much stronger than before. His new arrival and destruction cause the Avengers to reunite and take him down once and for all.
Ultron Unlimited contains one of the most powerful variants of Ultron, even though he's a villain the team has fought time and time again. There are high stakes in this story, with Ultron wiping out an entire country, and proving to be a massive threat to the team.
Under Seige
Avengers: Under Siege shows readers what would happen if the Avengers lost. This team consisted of Captain Marvel, Captain America, Hercules, Black Knight, and The Wasp leading the group.
Under Siege is a unique read because it shows the villains actually outsmarting the heroes. Under Siege features competent villains that truly challenge the Avengers. It's also refreshing to see a female hero leading the Avengers team for once. It also features Monica Rambeau as Captain Marvel, which will surprise fans who didn't know that she was the first female Captain Marvel, with Carol Danvers taking over the title years later.
Captain America Joins... The Avengers!
As the Avengers are on their way to catch Namor, they come across Captain America, frozen in ice. After the team rescues Captain America, he helps them stop an evil alien and fight Namor. Naturally, the team really kicked off here and Cap quickly become one of its most iconic members.
Before this story, Captain America was absent from comics for quite some time, so this served as his return to the page. This is also one of the best comic issues to read about Captain America, especially for fans who want to know more about his history with the team.
Civil War
Civil War follows Iron Man and Captain America on their biggest disagreement yet. When Iron Man wants the Avengers and all heroes to sign a registration act, which would make heroes work for the government, Captain America and other heroes who disagree team up against Tony Stark and those enforcing the registration act.
Civil War is one of the biggest and most popular Marvel events for pitting all of the biggest heroes against each other. It was also interesting to see whose side each hero took, and led to some of the biggest moments in comic history, such as Spider-Man revealing his identity to the world.
The Kree/Skrull War
The Kree and Skrull are known to have been at odds, but when they go to war and Earth finds itself in the middle of it, the Avengers have to jump in to protect the planet. This Avengers team consisted of Goliath, Vision, Scarlet Witch, Quicksilver, and Captain Marvell.
The Kree/Skrull War is a comic that brought the Avengers to space, which wasn't as common back when this was released. Many other Avengers make an appearance, but this story focuses mostly on Vision and the original Captain Marvell, who happens to be Kree.
