By the end of the game, players will have collected a substantial number of armor sets in God of War: Ragnarok, but which of them is the best? This fast and brutal action game has several different play styles, and each armor has stats and buffs that favor one style over another. For example, players who has mastered the game's parrying mechanic and focus on avoiding hits would benefit less from Defence than someone used to take hits. So the 'best' armor depends partly on the player in question.

Regardless, several sets can be struck out. Since God of War: Ragnarok is a long game, the best armors are all late-game items found near the end of the main story. From these, two choices present themselves as a cut above the rest. The Dragon Scaled set gives a large amount of Defence and Strength and, while worn, also provides stacking damage bonuses for every block and parry. The Steinbjörn set, however, goes in the opposite direction and gives a massive amount of Defence and health recovery, all arranged around letting Kratos take hits and keep coming.

The Best Armor Sets in God of War: Ragnarok

Dragon-Scaled Armor in God of War

Unlike the Radiance armor set, the Dragon Scaled armor set doesn't allow players to slow down time in God of War: Ragnarok, but it does something better. All the armor pieces have incredibly high Defence and Strength, and the chest piece gives a stacking Strength and Defence buff for each block or parry. The bracer and belt pieces give flat boosts to shield damage and deal that damage to nearby enemies for every block and parry. This armor can turn Kratos into a death-dealing machine as his Defence and Strength keep climbing up so long as he doesn't get hit, as that resets the chest piece's buffs. The Dragon Scaled armor is tied to the Scent of Survival favor and two other favors in Vanaheim, which players gets near the end of the Creatures of Prophecy quest. Once these Favors are complete, the armor can be crafted and upgraded at the shop.

However, if players are interested in using the systems in God of War: Ragnarok to mod their skills and discover new forms of combat away from endlessly blocking and parrying attacks, the Steinbjörn is the better bet. This set has the highest Defence of any armor in the game when fully upgraded and has abilities meant to let Kratos stay in the fight almost forever. The chest piece restores some lost health after taking significant damage, and the bracers and belt give a reasonable luck-based chance to stagger enemies whenever Kratos gets hurt. With a few luck enchantments, enemies will be vulnerable every time they touch Kratos, a perfect time to use some of God of War: Ragnarok's Heavy Runic attacks to finish them off. Crafting this armor is unlocked by using the Mystical Heirloom relic to kill several trolls scattered across the world.
