Many anime fans prefer to watch with subtitles, but huge series such as Attack on Titan offer a dubbed version not long after the show airs, so those who prefer English dubbing can watch too. Great voice actors, an accurate translation, and a good understanding of what makes a show good in the first place are all important aspects of a good English dub, and this is true of comedy as well as drama.
Shows such as The Devil is a Part-Timer! stand out as comedies with outstanding English dubs, which is a part of why the second season is so highly anticipated. But it's not the only anime series with a great English-languge version, which is why anime fans on Ranker voted on the best English dubbed anime of all time.
The Devil Is A Part-Timer! (2013)
The Devil is a Part-Timer Season 2 has the potential to be one of the shows of the summer when it begins airing next month, and it will help if the dub is anywhere near as good as the first season's. With its clever writing and hilarious premise — a demon lord is forced to begin working an ordinary fast-food job — the show was always likely to be a winner.
The casting is excellent with Josh Grelle, who also plays Armin in Attack on Titan, taking on the role of the devil. Dubbed dialogue can sometimes sound awkward, but everything flows remarkably well in The Devil is a Part-Timer. With a high joke-per-minute rate throughout, the dub can also make the show easier to keep up with.
Haikyuu!! (2014)
Passion and big personalities are at the heart of sport and that means they're just as important to sports anime. The Haikyuu!! dub needed to go all-out and luckily that's exactly what it did. Taking advantage of the talents of veteran voice actors like Chris Patton and Bryson Baugus, the Haikyuu!! dub is infused with a sense of humor that even outdoes the subtitled version.
Of course, Haikyuu!! is full of iconic scenes and good dramatic voice acting is just as important as the comedy. Luckily, the Haikyuu!! dub doesn't disappoint in this area either. The dub does a great job of making the main characters distinctive and, in particular, Greg Cote's characterization of Tanaka shines.
Overlord (2015)
For many actors, there is nothing more fun than playing a villain. Whilst portraying a hero can be a powerful thing, there is something joyful about being unashamedly bad and doing so in the most over-the-top way possible. Chris Guerrero makes the most of the opportunity to play Momonga in Overlord, an unscrupulous high-level wizard in a new world ripe for the taking, with a memorably evil performance.
The sub is full of great voice actors many of whom nail their roles but the Overlord dub really is dominated by Momonga and Guerrero's excellent voice acting. With a hotly anticipated fourth season of the show on the way next month, it shouldn't be too long of a wait for the return of anime's most iconic villainous protagonist.
My Hero Academia (2016)
Dubbing anime like My Hero Academia is a unique double-edged sword of having an amazing and established show to work with but also an immense pressure to do it justice. Many English dubs don't live up to the task but when they do, as is the case with the My Hero Academia dub, it's a gift to anime fans.
Highlights of a great voice cast include Christopher Sabbat, an icon since his work on the Dragon Ball Z dub, almost stealing the show as All Might but everyone has their chance to shine. Other than that, the dub is very faithful to the original and the only downside is that, with the sixth season not even beginning to air until October, it will feel like a long wait for more.
Noragami (2014)
Adapted from one of the best manga created by a woman, Noragami has a unique premise that involves a down-on-his-luck god, a girl whose soul can leave her body, and a whole world of unseen malevolent spirits that prey on negative emotions. As a result, the show is full of hilarious and emotional moments as well as action.
Luckily, the dub kills it in this area, bringing out the huge characters that give the show its heart and even adding in some hilarious new lines. A sub that stars Hiroshi Kamiya, Captain Levi in Attack on Titan, as the central character is tough to live up to but the dub is an amazing attempt.
The Rising Of The Shield Hero (2019)
The Rising of the Shield Hero's unique underdog story set in a fantasy world made it already one of the best fantasy anime of all time and the dub succeeded in opening up a new way to enjoy it. With a cast that includes Billy Kametz, best-known for voicing Josuke from JoJo's Bizarre Adventure, as the protagonist Naofumi and a bunch of other familiar voices, the dub has a prestigious feel.
On top of that, the voices are perfectly suited to each of the characters. With some engrossing character arcs one of the biggest selling points of the series, the dub translates them perfectly and small but noticeable script changes also add some spice.
How Not To Summon A Demon Lord (2018)
Usually, the job of an anime dub is to try to do justice to a show and try to match the original audio. In rare cases like How Not To Summon a Demon Lord, however, the dub can give new life to a show and make it even better. Set in an alternative fantasy world full of fanservice where shut-in gamer Takuma Sakamoto is summoned, the show already didn't take itself too seriously.
The dub simply took this point and ran with it, making a dub that's over-the-top, self-aware, and outright hilarious with some of the choices it makes. While the script does give respect to the original, it's very clear that the team behind it was having fun with it and it only makes things better.
The Seven Deadly Sins (2014)
Although there has been some debate over whether the sub or dub of The Seven Deadly Sins is better, with both sides having some strong points, this points to just how good of an alternative the dub is. The Sin of Wrath, Meliodas, is the heart of the show, and having Yuki Kaji, the voice actor of Eren in Attack on Titan, playing him in the sub is hard to top.
However, with six other Sins and a whole host of demons and human characters rounding off the show, there are plenty of performances in the dub that stand out over the sub. Diane and Ban are just two of the characters that the dub gets the best out of with some amazing voice acting.
Is It Wrong To Pick Up Girls In A Dungeon (2015)
An action-comedy about a guy named Bell Cranel who wants to be the greatest adventurer in the land, Is it Wrong to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon is full of distinctive characters. The dub manages to hit all the comedic and dramatic beats of the show well but its real strength is in voices that match its big personalities.
Luckily, playing the voices of the assorted gods and heroes of the show in the dub is an amazing cast that includes Bryson Baugus, the voice of Hinata in Haikyuu!!. Although it doesn't do anything too spectacular, the dub is just a perfect translation of what makes the show great.
That Time I Got Reincarnated As A Slime (2018)
With the hilarious premise of a man who gets thrust into a fantasy world in the form of, just as the title suggests, a slime, That Time I Got Reincarnated As a Slime delivers on its promise to be an endlessly creative action-fantasy. The protagonist, Satoru Mikami, is played confidently by veteran Jason Liebrecht as part of an impressive cast.
Just as importantly, the script is full of wit and even departs from the sub in order to make certain jokes and references tailored to the English-speaking audience. Somehow, the dub manages to get just about everything right.
