Mamoru Miyano has a long and distinguished career in anime, appearing as Cilian in Pokémon: Best Wishes and Kiba the white wolf in Wolf's Rain. He has won several awards for his acting, especially for Light Yagami in Death Note. Miyano chooses roles that best suit his edgy and passionate voice, allowing him to bring out the darkness in the most conflicted of his characters.

Miyano's characters are fun, intense, and care deeply about their causes, going as far as they can to achieve their goals. They share the same drive to succeed by any means necessary, although some take it further than others. Many of his characters thrive in environments surrounded by friends and family, but others strive to be independent and create worlds of their own.

Death The Kid - Soul Eater

Soul Eater follows the students of the Death Weapon Meister Academy. The students are split into pairings made up of a human that can turn into a weapon and a human that can wield the weapon. The pairings must collect the souls of 99 evil humans and a witch in order to achieve their goals. Soul Eater is an anime worth checking out for more seasoned anime viewers who will appreciate the macabre storytelling.

Death the Kid is one of the top fighters at the Academy and the son of Death himself. Expertly wielding the Demon Twin Guns, he is prideful and uptight and believes in balance, perfectionism, and order. While he can be humble, he can show a great deal of anger and obsessiveness when things are out of place.

Haru Kato - The Millionaire Detective: Balance Unlimited

Haru Kato from Millionaire Detective Balance Unlimited scowling angrily with a bandage on his head

An extremely rich and arrogant detective is assigned to Haru Kato's police division, causing Haru to butt heads with the detective over their morals and philosophies. While the detective thinks that all problems can be solved by throwing money at them, Haru believes in a more proactive approach to police work and is determined to bring criminals to justice through the usual means.

Haru is hot-blooded, like a lot of Mamoru Miyano's characters, and hates dishonesty. His convictions make him take the moral high ground whenever he can, which often leads to arguments between Haru, his fellow officers, and the millionaire detective Daisuke.

Kotaro Tatsumi - Zombie Land Saga

In one of the best zombie anime of recent years, Kotaro Tatsumi resurrects people from different eras in Japan to create a band of zombie idols. They often insult him and sometimes blame him for their situation, but know deep down that Kotaro is essential to their operation and often the reason they become inspired to perform.

Kotaro is extremely loud and eccentric. This role shows off Mamoru Miyano's incredible vocal range, as Kotaro screams, whispers, mumbles, and beatboxes his way through his lines. His line reading is unexpected and fun and adds a lot of personality to this already hilarious character.

Ling Yao - Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood

In what is considered to be one of the best anime currently on Netflix, the Elric brothers try to regain their human bodies by finding the Philosopher's Stone, uncovering government conspiracies along the way. One of the characters, Ling Yao, seeks the secret to immortality in order to ensure he becomes the leader of his clan.

Ling is forever optimistic and quick-thinking, leaning on his dedication to his friend and family to achieve his goals. Ling is protective of his friends and often puts them ahead of his own goals. He is incredibly passionate, which makes him a perfect fit for Mamoru Miyano's voice. In this role, the voice actor has ample opportunity to show off his range and abilities, such as the scene where Ling screams while turning into Greed.

Rin Matsuoka - Free!

Rin Matsuoka from Free! smiling at the camera, sat outside

This anime features students aspiring to be professional swimmers and gets a lot right about competitive swimming. Rin Matsuoka, who specializes in the butterfly swimming style, is competitive, moody, and obsessed with winning against his long-time rival Haruka Nanase.

Rin is jealous of Haruka and the Iwatobi Swim Club as they have fun together while Rin is alone and isolated from his friends. The voice acting helps to convey the anger Rin feels at being left out. He deeply cares about his friends, however, and shows a softer side to his personality when talking to his sister Gou.

Amai Mask - One Punch Man

One Punch Man follows Saitama, the most powerful character in a world full of strong superheroes, who goes unacknowledged despite his great deeds due to his low hero ranking. One of the high-ranking A-Class superheroes is Amai Mask ("Sweet Mask" in English), a beautiful model and actor who is consistently named the most popular hero by fan rankings.

Amai Mask chooses to remain A-Class as it prevents lower-ranking heroes from climbing the ranks without his blessing. He is extremely narcissistic and believes that heroes should be strong as well as beautiful. While Amai Mask hates everything evil, he is also merciless and is not above killing prisoners for their evil deeds, much like Mamoru Miyano's most famous character, Death Note's Light Yagami.

Shuu Tsukiyama - Tokyo Ghoul

Shuu Tsukiyama from Tokyo Ghoul laughing evilly with black eyes

In a world where ghouls, creatures who look like humans but eat human flesh, must hide their identities, a newly-made ghoul Ken Kaneki deals with various villains including Shuu Tsukiyama, also known as the Gourmet. Shuu is obsessed with eating Kaneki as he is half-human (specifically a "one-eyed ghoul"). However, as the series progresses, Shuu comes to genuinely care for Kaneki.

Shuu's outwardly friendly and confident demeanor is just a ruse to cover his true personality. He lures human prey into his 'restaurant' so he and his guests can eat them. Mamoru Miyano is best suited to this kind of role, putting on a friendly facade to hide the cruelty within the characters.

Tamaki Suoh - Ouran High School Host Club

Haruhi Fujioka accepts a scholarship to the prestigious Ouran Academy, which is extremely elitist and reserved for only the very richest families in society. Haruhi finds the Host Club, a school club that acts like a cafe for the female students of the school, run by six handsome boys who entertain the girls with chat and activities. When she becomes indebted to the club by smashing a priceless vase, Haruhi must put up with their shenanigans, mostly helmed by the leader of the group, Tamaki Suoh.

Tamaki is narcissistic, flamboyant, and well over-the-top, seeing himself as the father figure of the club and acting like a selfish prince. Although he is mostly used as comic relief, Tamaki is the heart of the show and often solves disputes with his unique perspective.

Zero Kiryu - Vampire Knight

Zero Kiryu from Vampire Knight standing outside at night, hair blowing in the wind

Vampire Knight is a show that focuses on Yuki Cross, a student at an academy that holds day classes for the human students and night classes for the vampire students. Yuki is in the midst of a love triangle with Kaname Kuran, a pureblood vampire that saved Yuki as a child, and Zero Kiryu, a vampire hunter that is also a vampire.

Zero is a gentle, kind character but deeply hates vampires, and distrusts the vampire students. He is protective of the human students, especially Yuki whom he loves. Zero's soft-spoken nature is a change of pace for Mamoru Miyano, but Zero still gets lots of opportunities to express his passion and trust issues, allowing the voice actor to display his talents.

Light Yagami - Death Note

Light Yagami from Death Note holding the Death Note and smiling

One of Mamoru Miyano's most famous roles, Light Yagami is a student that finds a death god's notebook which enables him to kill anyone by writing their name inside it. Light's journey is intriguing to watch, going from righteous student battling detectives to a serial killer that has lost all control.

Light is obsessed with justice and bringing bad people to order. He is a natural genius and has a flair for the dramatic, Mamoru Miyano brings a darkness and edginess to Light's voice that underlines how pompous and self-righteous Light truly is.
