Warning: SPOILERS for Berserk: The Golden Age Arc - Memorial Edition episode 6 and Berserk chapter 278A new Berserk series that adapts Studio 4°C's three Golden Age movies into TV show format doesn't change a disappointing retcon of the original manga and 1997 anime. This comes despite the fact that the ongoing Berserk: The Golden Age Arc - Memorial Edition anime has already added new scenes that weren't initially included in Studio 4°C's original trilogy.

In Kentaro Miura's original manga, Guts finds himself struggling against General Boscogn during the crucial battle for Doldrey and eventually breaks his sword in the one-on-one duel, greatly diminishing any chance at victory or his own survival. The only reason Guts later succeeds in slaying his adversary is because the apostle Zodd the Immortal lends him his own blade even though the opposing kingdom recruited Zodd.

Now in episode six of the Memorial Edition, the new series has decidedly kept the massive retcon in Studio 4°C's second Golden Age Arc movie the aptly named Battle for Doldrey. Rather than receiving aid from Zodd, Guts uses a flag that his leader Griffith threw his way moments earlier to help him sever the heads of Boscogn and his mighty steed. Many longtime fans of the manga and 1997 anime adaptation were undoubtedly displeased by the first retcon in Studio 4°C's second movie. Now they are let down even further by the Memorial Edition's failure to rectify this earlier mistake. Although many of these fans probably weren't expecting much from the Memorial Edition, the Memorial Edition has already made some massive improvements. For example, Berserk: Memorial Edition added the emotional bonfire of dreams scene which was initially missing from the movie.

Why Zodd Should Have Been the One to Save Guts, Not Griffith

Guts uses the flag that Griffith threw to him in his battle against General Boscogn in The Berserk Golden Age Arc Memorial Edition

Besides it being how the story was initially written, the fact that Zodd originally helps Guts win against Boscogn despite serving the opposing side develops Zodd. Later on in the manga, Zodd demonstrates that he prioritizes how his master Griffith views Guts over his own demonic desires to feast upon Guts in fulfillment of the Eclipse. In the yet-to-be-adapted 278th chapter of the manga, Zodd blames duty and servitude in his decision to not battle Guts even though the human is at his strongest. Another scene that also supports this reading transpires in the anime when Zodd first sees the Egg of the King around Griffith's neck. The apostle spares Guts and Griffith, so they can face their fate - which Berserk later reveals to be the Eclipse.

By the Berserk Memorial Edition refusing to reverse the original movie's retcon, the new adaptation fails to highlight crucial bond between both Guts and Zodd. Of course, the revision does further demonstrate how much Griffith depends on Guts, a dependence that later causes Griffith to embrace his transformation into Femto. But for the sake of the story from a chronological sense, Zodd's interference in Guts' battle against Boscogn creates a more effective air of mystery around Zodd's relationship with Guts for first-time viewers, and by eliminating this chilling ambiguity, the actual reveal is much less profound when it eventually comes with great vengeance in Berserk.
