In a stunningly hypnotic new piece of Berserk fan art, soul brothers turned arch enemies Guts and Griffith are opposites, moving away from each other but forever connected. Though contrary to one another, both contain an aspect of the other within themselves.Berserk, at its most basic level, is a story about Guts and Griffith and their relationship. On the one hand, there is Guts, who in addition to suffering tremendous mental and physical abuse from birth is constantly put in a position where he needs to fight for his own survival. As such, Guts, cosmically represents the raw, unfiltered, base desires of humanity. On the other hand, there is Griffith, who, despite being born to a lowly class, is always dreaming of being better, and working as hard as possible to actualize his dream while bringing as many people as possible with him. Cosmically then, Griffith represents the considered, refined, aspirational desires of humanity. While Guts and Griffith operated effectively without one another for a time, once they met, it became clear that they "completed" each other. That is, they formed different sides of the same coin, that needed one another to reach their next level of existence.Related: Bleach's Version of Griffith Orchestrated An Even More Brutal BetrayalIn a mesmerizing example of fan art posted to Twitter done in the ancient Japanese style of ukiyo-e, Justin96636 graphically reflects the complex push and pull of the Guts-Griffith contrary relationship. The opposing influences that Guts and Griffith represented are illustrated throughout the series but most obviously in their own interactions as well as their different influences on the Band of the Hawk. While the piece depicts Griffith as he is first portrayed in the Berserk manga, the savior in white shinning armor, benevolently leading his flock to the promised land, there is also the inclusion of Guts, Griffith's missing element, which artistically acknowledges that Griffith's rise would never have occurred without Gut's animal-like talent on the battlefield.

Guts is also depicted in the piece as he has been throughout the series, the dark, brooding, lone-wolf warrior in constant battle against demons both internal and external. Again, the inclusion of Griffith recognizes that he is Guts' missing element and that his refinement and personal growth would never have occurred without Griffith's acceptance, encouragement and friendship.

Despite its complexity and various plot lines, the true thread running throughout Berserk is the tale of two allies who are inextricably bound to one another but destined to be turned against one another. Justin96636 creatively teases this out in the contradictory images of Guts and Griffith along with the inclusion of the red flames emanating from the lower corner and the eclipsed moon floating in the sky just above it to signify the crimson Behelit's triggering of the eclipse. If one picture could sum up at once what Berserk is all about, this amazing piece of fan art says it all.
