Narcissistic suicidal schizoid alcoholic Benedict Cumberbatch gets his drink on in the first trailer for Patrick Melrose. Edward St. Aubyn's acclaimed series of novels serve as the basis for the limited series from Sky Atlantic and Showtime. Edward Berger (Deutschland 83) directs from a script by David Nicholls (Far From the Madding Crowd).
Cumberbatch plays Patrick Melrose, a booze-fueled, flamboyant playboy haunted by lingering childhood issues. The five-part series charts Patrick's tormented journey from abused child to substance abusing adult. The story travels from 1960s France to 1980s New York to 2000s Britain as it charts Patrick's road from trauma to excess to recovery and redemption. Each of the five episodes covers one of Edward St. Aubyn's five Patrick Melrose books. St. Aubyn's book Mother's Milk was previously adapted as a film with Jack Davenport as Patrick.
The first trailer for Patrick Melrose from Sky Atlantic and Showtime has now hit the internet. The opening shot of sweaty Benedict Cumberbatch downing martinis and proclaiming "We've taken Aqaba" like Lawrence of Arabia sets the tone for the title character's boozy adventures. We also get a glimpse of Melrose's formative years as the child of rich, messed-up parents. Hugo Weaving plays Patrick's abusive father David and Jennifer Jason Leigh plays his enabling mother Eleanor. The cast also includes Holliday Grainger (Cinderella), Jessica Raine (Fortitude), Anna Madeley (The Crown), Allison Williams (Get Out) and Blythe Danner (Gypsy). Check out Benedict Cumberbatch as the British Don Draper in the video above.
Benedict Cumberbatch once said Patrick Melrose was his dream role, and from the trailer it's easy to see why. In therapy, Patrick offers his stark self-assessment, calling himself "a narcissistic suicidal schizoid alcoholic." Melrose comes across cocky and self-destructive, chasing Allison Williams through the streets while sporting an eyepatch or hammering bottles of whiskey like there's no tomorrow. Drunk Cumberbatch may sound like fun, but the trailer promises darker shadings too. Grim-faced Hugo Weaving as Patrick's father looks particularly imposing. Imagine having Smith from The Matrix as your father, and ever-crazy Jennifer Jason Leigh as your mother. No wonder Patrick winds up a total trainwreck.
Expect plenty of awards attention coming Benedict Cumberbatch's way after Patrick Melrose hits the airwaves. The actor's busy 2018 slate also includes a return appearance as Doctor Strange in Avengers: Infinity War. He also plays Shere Kahn in Andy Serkis' retitled Jungle Book film Mowgli, and voices the titular Christmas stealer in Illumination's The Grinch. His delayed historical biopic The Current War should finally arrive this year too.
Patrick Melrose hits Sky Atlantic and Showtime later in 2018.
