The Frankenstein stage play starring Benedict Cumberbatch will stream for free on YouTube. Author Mary Shelley’s story of the humanmade creature known as Frankenstein has kept audiences riveted for literally centuries, thanks to its fascinating mixture of drama and horror.

Though the story has been adapted in a variety of ways over the years, one of the more unique takes on it was Oscar-winning director Danny Boyle’s stage production from 2011. Starring Benedict Cumberbatch and Jonny Lee Miller in alternating roles as Doctor Frankenstein and the eponymous monster, the play was an award-winning success. Now, as Bloody Disgusting reports, The National Theatre will broadcast the production for free via their YouTube channel on April 30th and May 1st.

Initially broadcast live in various cinemas back in 2011, the production has returned to cinemas on several other occasions since, though it has yet to be broadcast for free. Like many adaptations, Boyle’s version of Frankenstein has numerous differences to the original novel, with arguably the biggest alteration being that the story is told from the perspective of the monster rather than from his creator, Victor Frankenstein.

Boyle has been in and out of the news over the past few years, with reports that he’s doing everything from a new 28 Days Later film to overseeing production on a TV adaptation of his Leonardo DiCaprio lead film, The Beach. While those productions will likely be slow to arrive as a result of the ongoing Coronavirus pandemic, Frankenstein should be fascinating for locked down fans of the director’s work.
