Captain Lee announced his early departure from the show recently, receiving an outpouring of support from fans. His decision to leave comes after some serious medical issues onboard.
Captain Lee, who's not retiring from Below Deck, has been nearly inseparable from the branding of the show since his appearance way back in the very first episode. With his no-nonsense yet loving personality, he has set the bar extremely high for whomever his replacement will be. Even if Bravo chooses to hire in-house, the new captain will have a great deal to live up to.
Who’s The Most Popular Below Deck Captain?
In thinking of which established captain might replace Captain Lee, the logical thing to do would be to see who the most popular captain is between the Below Deck spinoffs. In a Reddit poll from earlier this year, user u/Formal-Antelope6077 sought to answer that very question. The overwhelming winner of the poll was Captain Glenn Shepherd from Below Deck Sailing Yacht, and it isn’t hard to see why. As one commenter put it, “Lee is a great OG captain but I definitely prefer Glenn. He’s a great balance of kind, stern and funny.” Indeed, Captain Glenn quickly captured fans’ hearts and would be a worthy replacement for the show’s original captain.
Why Below Deck Fans Think Captain Jason Chambers Deserves A Shot
The man who Below Deck fans sometimes recognize as the most attractive franchise captain, Jason Chambers, made his debut as the captain of Below Deck Down Under earlier this year. Fans will know that only one season has aired so far, but many are hopeful for Captain Jason’s return for Down Under season 2. One Redditor said, “With time, I think Jason can get there - it’s really hard to assess given the Covid restrictions in Australia. He needs another season to reevaluate.” Granted, perhaps temporarily joining the main series may be controversial to fans. Still, the general consensus is positive about the captain.
There are other suggestions that the poll doesn’t mention. One franchise captain is missing from the survey, merely due to the timing of the post. Captain Kerry Titheradge made his debut late this year on Below Deck Adventure, and fans have quickly touted him as one of the franchise's best captains. As a stern yet personable leader, Captain Kerry may rank among Below Deck’s absolute greatest captains ever. Fans may also remember that Captain Lee was briefly replaced during Below Deck season 9 by Captain Sean Meagher for health reasons again. His time was short-lived, however, and his presence didn’t sit well with fans or crew members.
One thing is certain; Captain Lee will be missed for the rest of the season. As a Below Deck veteran, his time and place on the show will be hard to replace. Nonetheless, this is a temporary replacement, and hopefully, Captain Lee will be back next season better and healthier than ever. Whoever replaces him this season will have great shoes to fill.
