Bosun Lewis Lupton was off to a good start on Below Deck Adventure with his calm leadership style, but his handling of Kyle Dickard's resignation turned some fans against him. He is known for being quiet-spoken and playing devil's advocate, but his lack of support for Nathan Morley rubbed fans the wrong way. Unlike bosun Jamie Sayed from Below Deck Down Under, who was very hard on his team, Lewis is a little too forgiving. Viewers are hoping to see him step up and be firmer when it comes to some of his crew members acting inappropriately.

Deckhand Nathan Morley initially said he loved how laid-back and willing to help Lewis is as a bosun, and fans noticed that he always said please and thank you when asking something of his crew. The problems arose when Lewis was given the difficult task of settling disputes between his deckhands. In a Reddit episode thread discussion started by u/teanailpolish, users went off on Lewis, saying, "Lewis is a really bad judge of character" and that "Lewis is spineless." Even after Below Deck Adventure's Captain Kerry Titheradge alerted Lewis to Kyle's problems, the two still looked rather friendly.

Nathan did not feel comfortable going to Lewis after Kyle threatened him over flushing a toilet because he did not think Lewis would do anything about it, so he went straight to the captain. Even after learning about everything Kyle was doing, Lewis still insisted on everyone being nice to Kyle as he left the boat when he was forced to resign. The bosun told everyone to give Kyle a nice send-off, and Below Deck Adventure fans were angry that Lewis didn't show Nathan more support.

Lewis is in charge of the entire deck crew, which consisted of Kyle, Nathan, and fellow Below Deck Adventure deckhand Michael Gilman. The crew was relatively green, meaning they have little to no yachting experience, so Below Deck Adventure fans were eager to see how he took on the challenge. Kyle has the most experience of the three deckhands on Below Deck Adventure, with Lewis even contemplating making him the lead deckhand. Fans were immediately turned off by Kyle's cocky attitude, his inappropriate flirts with stewardess Kasie Faddah in front of guests, and his poor treatment of Nathan.

While many fans were irritated by Lewis, they found Captain Kerry to be great at handling the issue with Kyle swiftly and effectively. Though the captain had a three-strike policy, Below Deck Adventure's Kyle threatening his fellow deckhand was serious enough that he wanted him off the yacht immediately, and fans were glad they did not have to see him stick around. Lewis will have to be tougher on his deckhands to redeem himself for the rest of Below Deck Adventure season 1.
