WARNING: Minor spoilers ahead for Bel-Air episode 5.

Will brings up one of his old friends from Philadelphia to Tray in Bel-Air episode 5, setting up the inclusion of one of Fresh Prince’s mysteriously underutilized characters. After only the first five episodes of Bel-Air, the reboot has done an excellent job of integrating Fresh Prince characters who typically occurred in very different points of the original series. From Fresh Prince’s season 5 characters Lisa and Fred Wilkes being moved up to season 1 to Tray playing a far more prominent role, Bel-Air is introducing characters to the drama much earlier than expected.

When Will picks up Tray from the airport in Bel-Air episode 5, he initially asks his best friend whether he still hangs around with a lot of their old companions at the park in West Philly. The only name that Will specifically mentions in his question is Jackie, who Fresh Prince fans remember from Will’s time at college in season 4. Played by Tyra Banks, Fresh Prince's Jackie Ames was one of Will’s close friends from Philadelphia who got a scholarship to play basketball at the university Will and Carlton attended. While Jackie was first introduced as a possible love interest for Carlton, The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air revealed that she was one of Will’s oldest friends, and quickly shifted to setting up her and Will as a possible couple.

Bel-Air mentioning Jackie is a fun Easter egg for Fresh Prince fans, but it also suggests that the reboot is setting up the character to have a much more satisfying arc than in the original series. Jackie, who was Tyra Banks’ first acting role, was a prominent recurring character in Fresh Prince of Bel-Air season 4, but she disappeared halfway through the season. After Will had made a fool out of himself trying to take Jackie from her new boyfriend by dancing with her and getting extremely drunk, Jackie made Carlton drive her home before Alfonso Ribeiro’s character had a heart-to-heart with his cousin. A drunken Will lamented that his actions cost him Jackie and his self-respect. While viewers expected to see Jackie confront Will about his behavior in the following episode, however, Tyra Banks’ character never appeared again in the series.

Will Smith and Tyra Banks in The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air Season 4

Jackie’s abrupt departure from Fresh Prince left her storyline feeling unfinished, especially since she became Will’s greatest reminder of home during season 4. Since Jackie and Will worked together at the campus store, The Peacock Stop, it was strange that she was neither heard from nor seen with Will again. While the original series could have continued her storyline by stating that she and Will would continue to be friends and nothing more, she was simply written out. Although it seemed like Fresh Prince had forgotten about Jackie entirely, Bel-Air proves that the character is still important in bringing the fictional story of Will Smith back to the screen.

Since Will and Jackie are still in high school during Fresh Prince season 1, it doesn’t seem that she’ll appear until a few seasons later when the characters enter college. While it’s exciting that Bel-Air is laying the groundwork for Jackie so early on, her introduction may also be delayed due to Will’s season 1 romance with Lisa Wilkes. Lisa wasn’t introduced until season 5 of Fresh Prince as Will’s most significant love interest, so the reboot has moved her role up considerably. If Bel-Air decides to use Jackie as another romantic interest for Will, the reboot may be waiting until Will and Lisa’s love story has concluded or taken a break before bringing her in. However, Jackie’s role in Bel-Air season 1, if she does indeed appear that early, may be best served if she’s simply a friend to Will.
