Beauty and the Beast is, without doubt, one of the most popular animated films of all time. The 1991 movie musical became the first-ever animated film to be nominated for the Academy Award for Best Picture, showcasing the sheer quality of the overall story, the emotion injected and the incredible songs that were used.

However, there's no doubt that it was the characters themselves that made this movie a real hit. Whether it's the original animation or the 2017 live-action remake, this film's characters really have become some of the most iconic in movie history. There is a real mix of personalities throughout the film which are certainly different in likability.

Plumette

Plumette

Plumette is the feather duster within Beauty and the Beast, and someone who isn't actually given a name within the animated film. However, when it comes to the live-action, Plumette is given a much larger focus, especially as the romantic interest to Lumiere.

She's a fun and flirtatious character that is always showcased in a kind manner and that certainly does make her likeable. However, in a film packed full of major personalities, Plumette falls just short in comparison.

Gaston

Gaston

While Gaston is actually the villain of this movie, that doesn't mean that he's not likeable at points. When it comes to Disney villains, Gaston is certainly one of the greatest as he is so full of life, personality, and charisma. Gaston certainly isn't short of confidence, and that in itself is what makes him likeable to a degree.

However, it's impossible to rate him too high, simply because of how he behaves at points. Gaston is arrogant and a bully who doesn't leave Belle alone and tries to belittle everyone else. He willingly attempts to kill the Beast, simply because he appears different and that leads to him being unlikeable at many points.

LeFou

LeFou

LeFou is someone who really gets caught in two worlds throughout the film. LeFou is, deep down just a very kind person who is looking for friendship and someone to accept him. That's what makes him quite likeable as all he does is try to impress people and make others laugh.

However, because he ultimately spends all of his time with Gaston, trying to help him as much as possible and because of the manner in which he behaves alongside of him, that stops him from being too likeable.

Maurice

Maurice

Maurice is certainly a kind character who just wants to do his best by his daughter, trying to provide the nicest possible life for her. While others are quick to judge him as 'crazy' the fact of the matter is that he is actually just a very creative mind who is always looking to invent something new.

Maurice is very intelligent and incredibly caring. Because it is just himself and Belle, he wants to make sure that she's always protected, and when he gets back from the castle, he does everything in his power to take people to save her, showing how his heart works.

Cogsworth

Cogsworth

Cogsworth is certainly one of the most well-known Disney characters of all time and he is someone who does have his heart in the right place. Ultimately, he wants what is best for the Beast and for everyone else within the castle, which is why he's likeable.

However, Cogsworth can be very grumpy and he likes to stick by the rules at all times, never venturing away from them. While there's nothing wrong with that, it just doesn't make him quite as likeable as some other characters.

Beast

The Beast is obviously one of the core characters within the movie, and someone who undergoes a brilliant transformation. Of course, the Beast does have a lot of anger problems at the beginning, having a very short fuse which leads to him losing his temper very quickly.

However, over the course of the movie the Beast clearly changes. He becomes much calmer and more gentle, focusing on actually learning about the people around him by listening. It shows his softer and funnier side and that is why he is ultimately very likeable.

Chip

Chip

Chip is just an incredibly loveable and cute character. He's the child of the story and because of that, there is a level of innocence in everything that he does. Chip is very curious about everything and always wants to learn, doing so in a polite and kind manner.

He ends up playing a key part in the film and ensuring that Belle and Maurice are safe and a lot of that is down to his curiosity. However, everything Chip does is always done with a sense of fun and because he's young, it instantly makes him likeable to a lot of people.

Mrs. Potts

Angela Lansbury as Mrs. Potts in Beauty and the Beast

Mrs. Potts works as the motherly character within this movie and it's impossible not to find her very likeable. She is a calming presence on everyone within the film and she really works hard to make sure everything is in ship-shape and that everyone within the castle is as happy as possible.

She is patient with everyone and really tries to help, especially with the love between Belle and the Beast. Mrs. Potts tries to teach them both the values that they need to learn, with her experience shining through to make her incredibly likeable.

Lumiere

Lumiere brings a brilliant energy to the film whenever he appears, lighting up the movie with his passion and charisma. His sole purpose is to serve and ensure that everyone is happy and having a good time, and that is reflected in how kind he is.

Lumiere might not always think before he acts, unlike his partner in crime Cogsworth. However, that's what makes him so loveable overall. He tries to make things as fun for everyone else in the castle, but when he needs to be serious to fight for them, he is happy to do that as well, becoming one of Disney's greatest ever sidekicks.

Belle

There's no doubt that the most likeable character within Beauty and the Beast was absolutely Belle. She is the princess here, but she's not the stereotypical type of person that would fit into this slot. Belle is a very intelligent, kind, and caring individual who is all about thinking of others before herself.

She's able to judge the Beast on his true inner-self, rather than worrying about his physical appearance. She treats everyone with kindness and even manages to be polite to Gaston for the most part. Belle is easily one of the most popular Disney princesses of all time and is the most likeable character within this film.
