Timothée Chalamet and Steve Carell star in the teasers for the true story memoir, Beautiful Boy. Though Chalamet broke out last year thanks to his turn as lovestruck young Elio in Call Me By Your Name, that was far from the only significant movie that the actor made in 2017. He also played supporting roles in fellow Best Picture Oscar nominee Lady Bird and Scott Cooper's brutal western Hostiles, further cementing his status as the hot new thing in the world of indie film.

Beautiful Boy stars Chalamet as Nic Sheff, a young man who develops a terrible meth addiction that alienates him from his caring father David (Carell). The film is based on the memoirs written by the real life David and Nic, titled Beautiful Boy: A Father's Journey Through His Son's Addiction and Tweak: Growing Up on Methamphetamines. Some years back, Cameron Crowe was attached to adapt the Sheffs' stories for the big screen, with Mark Wahlberg circling the role of David. Obviously, that version of the movie didn't pan out and Beautiful Boy was instead directed by Belgium filmmaker Felix Van Groeningen (The Broken Circle Breakdown).

Amazon Studios has unveiled a pair of teasers for Beautiful Boy, ahead of the full-length trailer release. The first, titled "Who Are You", contrasts scenes from Nic's seemingly happy life with his drug use and an emotional confrontation with his father. The second teaser, titled "This is Me", spotlights how Nic and David have grown apart over the years, in part fueled by Nic's drug abuse.

Written by Luke Davies (Lion), Beautiful Boy also stars IT's Jack Dylan Grazer as the 12-year old version of Nic, along with Maura Tierney (The Affair) as Nic's stepmother Karen and Amy Ryan (Birdman) as Nic's biological mother Vicki. Amazon has already positioned the film to be an awards season contender by setting it for a fall theatrical launch. At the moment, Beautiful Boy's opening weekend competition includes the sequel Goosebumps: Haunted Halloween and the Neil Armstrong space drama First Man (Damien Chazelle's own potential Oscar contender). Chalamet, for his part, will be back onscreen well before then in this July's coming of age drama Hot Summer Nights.

Chalamet and Carell may well end up delivering awards worthy performances in Beautiful Boy, if the emotional first look teaser footage is any indicator. The film is thematically in line with Groeningen and Davies' best previous work, suggesting the pair will similarly handle the Schiffs' experiences with the sensitivity they deserve. If nothing else, the movie should offer further proof that Chalamet is a young acting talent that will continue to thrive for years to come.
