Ghost of Tsushima offers players a challenge without being too frustrating. The boss fights, however, can be a completely different story. Beautifully cinematic, clearly focusing in on historical descriptions of ancient Japanese dueling styles, Ghost of Tsushima's boss fights are some of the most original one-on-ones in recent video game history.

Lady Masako in particular has been leaving Jin with a 'frustrated' expression since they first met. At every turn in her story, Jin has been conflicted about whether or not to pity or chastise her. Cleary her revenge tour is justified, but Jin can't quite get himself in line with her methods. This, of course, boils over to the point where Lady Masako turns to Jin and pretty much says, "If you're not with me, you're against me." They stare each other down, draw their swords, and engage in a duel neither of them wants to have. This guide will walk players through the steps necessary to reach Masako's boss fight, as well as how to best defeat her.

How to Beat Lady Masako in Ghost of Tsushima

Ghost of Tsushima Lady Masako (2)

Players will need to reach the eighth chapter in Lady Masako's storyline entitled, 'The Conspirator' which will become available upon beginning Act II. Lady Masako has effectively tracked down someone who 'might' have something to do with her family's death. Without any sufficient evidence, Jin cannot in good conscious let Masako bring harm to her suspect. She sees this as a sign of betrayal and challenges Jin in a duel to the death.

The most important thing to remember about Masako is her speed and attack power. Getting caught up in one of her combos will most likely end in players being stabbed in the back as they bleed out on the ground. Stance wise, players should focus on whatever they've invested the most technique points in. The Water Stance, however, proves effective as the rapid triangle attacks do well to chip away at Masako's health, as well as break her guard. She is very mobile during this fight. Most of her attacks will cover lots of ground. Sidestepping is key to follow up with a counter-attack. Rolling away will put too much distance between Jin and Masako, and she'll follow up with a long-ranged sidestepping attack of her own. The best thing players can do is perfect parry Masako. This will leave her wide open for direct damage to her health.

The Player will want to make sure they avoid her unblock-able red attacks as she has quite a few of them. Also, be wary of her 'draw sword' attack. When players see Masako sheath her weapon and pace slowly towards them, they can quickly switch to Stone Stance and give her a good 1,2 (or 3) poke. Jin is nearing the end of the fight when Mongols begin shooting flaming arrows into the dueling area. He pleads with Masako to stop the madness, but she'll have to be brought within an inch of her life before she yields. The fire arrows signal stage three of the fight and Masako will become relentless. There will be no room to launch an offensive, so Jin will have to sidestep and counter to methodically end the duel.

Jin's character is one of the best in recent video game history. He is cemented in his morals and hates the fact that he's been forced to break his family's code. He'll hold onto any sense of honor he can which is why he ultimately spares Lady Masako. Together they fend off the approaching Mongols and continue on their quest to avenge her family.
