Disney+ has unveiled a trailer for Baymax!, the upcoming Big Hero 6 spinoff series, which is set to premiere in summer 2022. Inspired by the Marvel comics of the same name, Baymax first appeared on screen in Big Hero 6 in 2014. The film follows teen robotics prodigy Hiro Hamada who restores Baymax, his late brother’s healthcare provider robot. With a crew of fellow tech-specialist youngsters, Hiro and Baymax work to avenge Tadashi’s death. Big Hero 6: The Series aired from 2017 to 2021 and continued to follow the adventures of Hiro and Baymax.
While Baymax helped save the world through combat as a part of Big Hero 6, Baymax! will follow the affable, peculiar robot's return to his roots in wellness as he helps citizens of the fictional San Fransokyo. The series was developed by Academy Award winner Don Hall, who helmed Big Hero 6 and 2021's Raya and the Last Dragon. Further info on the production, such as the voice cast or number of episodes, has not yet been announced.
Walt Disney Animation Studios’ new Baymax! trailer shows the “personal healthcare companion” saving San Fransokyo one patient at a time, whether it’s an elderly citizen in need of exercise or a barista sidelined by an ankle injury. Baymax also takes care to educate the children of San Fransokyo with a twenty-minute presentation on proper band-aid usage. Stripped of his shiny red suit, Baymax! sees the robot’s slow-moving yet well-meaning attempts to keep his city healthy and functioning. Check out the full trailer below.
News of another Big Hero 6-inspired series was announced in December 2020. Baymax! will be just one of a number of Disney animated series based on popular films, including Moana, Zootopia, and The Princess and the Frog, all of which will stream exclusively on Disney+. Baymax! is set to lead the pack with its summer 2020 release.
The Baymax! trailer arrives as part of Disney+ Day’s deluge of announcements and trailers. November 12 marks the two-year anniversary of the launch of Disney+, and the streaming service is celebrating with an outpouring of new content, re-released shorts, and secret Disney screenings. The Baymax! trailer shows off a cute new aspect of the Big Hero 6 world, which is clearly a strong franchise for Disney. The film earned over $650 million worldwide and won the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature, so it's no surprise that Disney is continuing to invest in it. What's interesting, though, is the approach they're taking with two TV series instead of a traditional film sequel. The trailer for Baymax! seems like a lighthearted take on the Big Hero 6 world, which, combined with its episodic nature, makes it perfect for younger viewers.
