The CW has released a full-length trailer and poster for its Batwoman TV series. At the moment, the network is home to five DC superhero series, including four that take place in a shared continuity known as the Arrowverse (Arrow, The Flash, Legends of Tomorrow, Supergirl) and one that exists in a world all its own (Black Lightning). However, with Arrow ending after next season and Crisis on Infinite Earths serving as this year's major Arrowverse crossover event, there are big changes on the horizon for The CW's DC TV landscape. So, what better time to introduce a brand-new Arrowverse show altogether?
Cue this fall's Batwoman, which will star Ruby Rose (Orange is the New Black) as the titular crime-fighter who - by day - goes by Kate Kane. Rose actually made her debut as the character in last year's Arrowverse crossover event, Elseworlds, so viewers already have an idea of what she'll be like in the role. As for her show: the series was developed by Caroline Dries (The Vampire Diaries) and will air back to back with Supergirl on Sunday nights, beginning this fall. Now, the series has gotten an official preview to boot.

As seen in the trailer, the Batwoman pilot takes place before the events of Elseworlds and reveals what led to Kane suiting up as a vigilante in the first place. The promo also provides a quick glimpse at Gotham City, which (as established in Elseworlds) has fallen into disarray since Batman mysteriously vanished a few years earlier. Rose, of course, gets the bulk of the spotlight here, though she's joined in the trailer by important players like Jacob Kane (Dougray Scott), Kate's father and the head of Crows Private Security, which sets up shop in Gotham in an attempt to curb the city's escalating crime rate. Other key characters featured here include Sophie Moore (Meagan Tandy) - Jacob's top employee and Kate's ex-girlfriend - as well as the super-villain Alice (Rachel Skarsten) and Luke Fox (Camrus Johnson), the son of Bruce Wayne's tech guru Lucius Fox.
All in all, this Batwoman footage is reminiscent of Arrow, in the sense that its action and general atmosphere is grittier and otherwise darker than those of the other Arrowverse series. The trailer's also big on emphasizing the women empowerment aspect of the show - though it probably comes off more heavy-handed here than it will in the series itself - and does an overall proper job of teasing Kate's origin story, complete with the evolution of her costume into the version glimpsed in Elseworlds. Indeed, with Arrow on its way out, that creates an opening for a more grounded vigilante crime series in the Arrowverse that Batwoman should fill nicely, by the look of things.
