Batwoman celebrates the start of filming on season 2 with a behind-the-scenes video. The show premiered last year and quickly became an important part of The CW's Arrowverse. Season 1 starred Ruby Rose as Kate Kane, who took on the Batwoman mantle while wrestling with her own demons. In addition to season 1, Rose played a role in two different Arrowverse crossovers. She made her debut in Elseworlds, before featuring more prominently in last season's Crisis on Infinite Earths. Batwoman season 1 was a success for The CW, leading the network to order season 2 in January.

However, Batwoman season 2 will be quite different from season 1. In May, Rose shocked viewers by announcing her departure from the series. Then, in July, the show cast a new actor, Javicia Leslie, who will take on the leading role. She'll become the new Batwoman, but play Ryan Wilder, a character created especially for the Arrowverse. Leslie has called Ryan an ordinary street kid, which should make for an exciting take on the iconic hero. For her part, Rose has been nothing but supportive of Leslie publicly, recently saying she was "so proud and so happy" when she heard the news of her casting.

Batwoman season 2 premieres in January 2021, as all Arrowverse shows were held due to the coronavirus pandemic. However, some have already started work on their upcoming seasons or will soon. Among them is Batwoman, which began filming this week. On the Batwoman official Twitter, actors Nicole Kang and Camrus Johnson, who play Mary Hamilton and Luke Fox, appear in a behind-the-scenes video. In it, they joke around, while also reassuring fans the set is completely safe despite the pandemic. Check out the video below:

Arrowverse viewers should be happy to hear the Batwoman cast is back at work. That show beginning filming is especially exciting, considering the big changes ahead. Now that production has started, there will be more opportunities to learn about Leslie's new character. It also means a Batwoman costume reveal may be closer. Though it hasn't been confirmed a different Batsuit is on the way, a new look was suggested in DC Multiverse promotional art by Jim Lee. The costume shown there features more red than Kate Kane's did, which would make Leslie's hero stand out even more.

Beyond the Batsuit, Batwoman season 2 will have to contend with several other changes stemming from Rose's exit. Though Kate won't be killed off, her absence will have to be explained in some way. She's also tied to every single character on the show, particularly the villain Alice, her twin sister. It will be interesting to see how Batwoman season 2 works Ryan Wilder into the story and develops her own unique relationship with the other characters. Now that filming has started on Batwoman's upcoming season, hopefully answers are on the way.
