Popular Brooklyn Nine-Nine star Stephanie Beatriz is already campaigning for the newly-vacant Batwoman role. Stephanie Beatriz has previously starred in films like independent drama Short Term 12 and was later a voice for Gertie in Ice Age: Collision Course. However, she’s best known for her role as the “badass” detective Rosa Diaz in Brooklyn Nine-Nine, a role she has occupied for seven seasons now. Beatriz has also previously rubbed shoulders with Gotham City-related characters, as she voiced General Sweet Mayhem in The Lego Movie 2, and it appears Gotham is once again of interest to Beatriz.

Ruby Rose’s Batwoman (Kate Kane) joined CW’s Arrowverse for the Elseworlds crossover in 2018 and later joined the Crisis on Infinite Earth’s crossover too. The first official season of Batwoman began in October of 2019 and recently concluded with a major reveal to set up season 2. Also, showrunner Caroline Dries revealed plans for Kate Kane, which involves a Batwoman and Superman & Lois crossover in Smallville. Yesterday, however, the surprising news broke that Rose decided to make the “very difficult decision” of stepping down as Batwoman after only one season. It’s unclear exactly why she stepped down, but DC will now have to recast for season 2, and it seems like detective Rosa Diaz is up for this case.

Not long after news broke on Rose’s departure from Batwoman, Beatriz made a post on Twitter, writing “*reads everything about Batwoman, seemingly throwing her name in the hat for the role. She also replied to a comment that said: “GO METHOD,” with Beatriz writing, “legit did dye my hair red last month,” further making her pitch that she already has Kate Kane’s signature red hair. Full tweets can be seen below:

One of the things the joint statement from the Batwoman production companies and The CW stated was that as well as casting a new actress, they want a “member of the LGBTQ community.” Beatriz has not only shown plenty of her action chops on Brooklyn, but she’s also openly a proud part of the LGBTQ community, coming out as bisexual in 2016, which later found its way into Brooklyn Nine-Nine season 5, where Rosa revealed she was bisexual. So Beatriz certainly seems to tick the boxes for Batwoman. Plus, she’s now made it public knowledge that she also reads Batwoman content and currently has red hair.

It would be another major television role for Beatriz if she does end up playing Kate Kane, but she previously also pitched to play She-Hulk and later stated Brooklyn’s renewal for season 8 would prevent her from taking that role. With no CW shows coming until 2021 due to production shutdowns, it’ll be interesting to see if any Brooklyn commitments would interfere with Beatriz joining Batwoman as well. As the news is still fresh, fans will likely have to wait a little while before they find out if Beatriz or another actress will take over as Batwoman.
