Batwoman has found its new lead in Javicia Leslie following Ruby Rose's highly-publicized exit. The actress joined the Arrowverse as Kate Kane/Batwoman for 2018's Elseworlds crossover. Her character was a great addition, with many praising her chemistry with Melissa Benoist's Supergirl in particular. That initial appearance led to her own series, which finished season 1 earlier this year. Batwoman also teamed up with her fellow Arrowverse heroes for Crisis on Infinite Earths this past season, which was another successful crossover event for The CW.

Due to Batwoman's successful season 1, many were shocked when Rose announced her departure from the series in May, ahead of the already ordered season 2. In the days following the news, it became clear the decision was mostly mutual, with sources from the show indicating it wasn't a good fit for Rose. Soon after, it was revealed Batwoman wouldn't be recasting Kate Kane, but would rather replace her with a new character altogether, Ryan Wilder, who will then take up the Batwoman mantle. A casting notice at the time described Ryan as "likable, messy, a little goofy and untamed" and "nothing like Kate Kane." She's also "an out lesbian, athletic, raw, passionate, fallible, and very much not your stereotypical All-American hero."

Leslie has been cast as Ryan, Batwoman's new series lead for season 2. Before she earned the role, Leslie starred in the CBS comedy God Friended Me and also appeared on MacGyver. She released a statement about her casting, pointing out the significance of a Black woman playing Batwoman:

I am extremely proud to be the first Black actress to play the iconic role of Batwoman on television, and as a bisexual woman, I am honored to join this groundbreaking show which has been such a trailblazer for the LGBTQ+ community.

Up until now, it's been hard to get an idea of what Batwoman season 2 will look like. Knowing who the new series lead is helps, but much of the show's story going forward remains a mystery. Kate Kane is connected to every character on Batwoman and is even related to some of them. It will be hard for a new character to develop relationships as close as the ones Kate has. However, Leslie seems like a great choice for Ryan Wilder and based on her statement, is excited about joining the show. Batwoman season 2 will essentially be a reboot for The CW series, as audiences are introduced to Leslie's new Batwoman.

As Batwoman won't be back until 2021, viewers have more time than they usually would to get used to a new lead. Leslie's casting so far ahead of season 2 will give Warner Bros. and The CW some unique promotional opportunities shows don't usually get in the midst of their runs. For example, there will likely be a reveal of Leslie in the Batsuit or a preview of what sorts of gadgets her Batwoman may use. All in all, Leslie's casting should only increase excitement for Batwoman season 2.
