Syfy has greenlit a two-hour pilot for a new Battlestar Galactica prequel, Battlestar Galactica: Blood and Chrome. Battlestar Galactica co-creator and executive producer David Eick will return, sans partner Ron Moore. This is the second prequel in the BSG franchise to go into production but there is no word yet on a renewal for the current prequel series, Caprica.
Where Caprica focuses on the early childhood years of William Adama and the inception of the Centurion Cylons, Blood And Chrome will explore a Bill Adama who is fresh from his initial military training thrust into the midst of the first Cylon war.
Here is the official synopsis for the series:
Battlestar Galactica: Blood & Chrome takes place in the 10th year of the first Cylon war. As the battle between humans and their creation, a sentient robotic race, rages across the 12 colonial worlds, a brash rookie viper pilot enters the fray. Ensign William Adama, barely in his 20′s and a recent Academy graduate, finds himself assigned to the newest battlestar in the Colonial fleet’ the Galactica. The talented but hot-headed risk-taker soon finds himself leading a dangerous top secret mission that, if successful, will turn the tide of the decade long war in favor of the desperate fleet.
BSG fans may be more likely to engage with a series that focuses on the show’s beloved male protagonist, and the themes that drew them into the Battlestar universe initially.
Syfy programming head Mark Stern says, “We jumped at the chance to revisit the William Adama character and explore this exciting chapter in the BSG narrative which falls between the events of the original series and the prequel, ‘Caprica.’
David Eick seems to grasp what the series would need to do in order to captivate the bulk of its original following. He emphasizes that the show will revisit the tone and scope of his original BSG vision. Eick is reported as saying that Blood And Chrome will maintain “the themes of politics, social propaganda, and the timeless question: what does it mean to be human? – ‘Blood & Chrome’ will also return us to the authentic, relentless depiction of combat and the agony and ecstasy of human-Cylon war, which was the hallmark of ‘Battlestar Galactica’s’ early seasons.”
As a huge BSG fan, I would love to see a return to the thematic threads and storylines that made the first few seasons of the series so deeply compelling.
