Word from reputable industry source Tom Henderson suggests Battlefield 6 may not make its way to PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, though Electronic Arts is reportedly eyeing a day-and-date rollout on Xbox Game Pass. Interestingly, this particular rumor flies in the face of another from earlier this year, wherein Henderson claimed 2021's Battlefield may launch across current and last-gen consoles.

In general, the Battlefield 6 rumors have yet to calm down over the course of the last several months. Another recent report, for example, describes the newest entry in the military shooter series as a near-future adventure boasting watchful drones and Boston Dynamics-inspired robot technology. In addition, a survey that Electronic Arts sent to fans indicates the publisher and developer DICE have considered exploring a free-to-play mode and a 100-player Guild/Clan system. Now a new report is raising the question of whether or not fans on last-gen consoles will get to experience any of the Battlefield franchise's alleged new bells and whistles.

Industry insider Tom Henderson took to Twitter yesterday, saying he's yet to hear anything substantial about the next Battlefield title's launch on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. As a result, Henderson believes a last-gen rollout is not on the cards. One reason for this may rest in Electronic Arts' alleged interest in launching Battlefield 6 day-and-date on Microsoft's ever-popular Xbox Game Pass subscription service - a move that would "boost up player numbers," the leaker added at the end of his post.

While Battlefield 6 potentially skipping last-gen would be unfortunate for fans who are unable to get their hands on current-gen hardware, such a decision does fall in line with EA's previous hints and teases about the project. In an earnings call last fall, EA CEO Andrew Wilson divulged that PS5 and Xbox Series X are allowing Battlefield developers to realize their “next-gen vision” for the property.

DICE's ambitious vision doesn't merely revolve around prettier graphics and faster loading times, either. According to Wilson, the team is carefully crafting an experience that features “never-before-seen scale." And to help the Stockholm-based group see its plans through to completion, EA recently tapped Need for Speed studio Criterion to assist in the final stretch of the new Battlefield title's development.
