EA and DICE have officially revealed this year's Battlefield, and it's called Battlefield 2042. EA has debuted the first trailer for the new Battlefield, which confirms many leaks, such as the near-future setting and numerous key features for the game. The new Battlefield game will be a multiplayer-only shooter set in a world that is basically collapsing thanks to catastrophic environmental effects and destructive technology.

The last few months have seen plenty of Battlefield leaks. Screenshots from Battlefield 2042 leaked showing tornadoes, which will be a key gameplay element and have the ability to fling players, debris, and vehicles around the map. A trailer also leaked for the game and, given its content, it appears to have been legitimate, but it was not the trailer that EA chose to release to the public, although it has some similarities.

The new Battlefield 2042 trailer plays heavily into the franchise's key "Only in Battlefield" moments, with a character jumping out of a jet to shoot down pursuers, using an ATV to take down a helicopter, and, of course, the new and terrifying tornadoes that can really tear up the 128-player maps. There are plenty of new things in the Battlefield 2042 trailer that didn't leak, such as wingsuits and an October 22, 2021 release date (announced on a recent EA blog post). A gameplay reveal will also happen on Sunday, June 13.

As of right now, this looks like the Battlefield game fans have been wanting for several years. Despite the decent reception of Battlefield 1Battlefield V failed to make any kind of impression on series veterans and left them desiring a return to the modern day. Although 2042 isn't present day and the game will feature new weapons and tech, it's clearly trying to emulate Battlefield 3 and with key visuals such as replicating iconic community moments and even locations that seem to be inspired by previous maps from the series.

Whether or not Battlefield 2042 rights the wrongs of Battlefield V remains to be seen, but it's clear this is meant to be a love letter to fans. With a beta planned prior to launch, fans will get a good idea of what to expect from the upcoming entry and can decide if DICE was able to successfully recover from its last blunder in the franchise. It looks as if Battlefield 2042 is doing its best to hit the right notes for fans, but without compromising on moving the series forward. With EA Play in a month, it's likely fans will get to hear even more about DICE's vision of the game as well.
