A Battlefield 2042 player has discovered that the effects of smoke grenades can be canceled by opening the menu thanks to a newly-found glitch. Battlefield 2042 has suffered from various glitches and bugs since its release earlier this month, but as smoke grenades are an integral part of the tactical first-person shooter, this exploit is particularly notable. Instantly eliminating the effects of the smoke grenade can create an unfair advantage for certain players, which could unbalance the game.
Battlefield 2042 has not had a smooth launch, with the game filled with a variety of performance issues and bugs impacting player experiences and causing an overwhelmingly negative response from fans. Since its release on November 19, EA has committed to addressing several issues through a series of upcoming patches in the hopes of fixing the new game. Battlefield 2042 was already facing a variety of factors before it released, with many criticizing the title for lacking core features at launch. The lukewarm response to the brand-new specialist system and a lack of features such as voice chat has led to many mostly-negative Battlefield 2042 user reviews on Steam.
As reported by GamesRadar, a Reddit user by the name of Jagsfootball51 posted a video showing the Battlefield 2042 smoke grenade exploit in action. In the clip, the player is able to completely cancel the effects of a smoke grenade by entering the menu, switching to the Collections screen, then exiting the menu. The smoke grenade appears to have been initially thrown by the opposing team to obscure vision and revive a downed teammate safely. However, after using the exploit, the player is shown quickly eliminating the unsuspecting enemies.

This glitch impacts the competitive aspect of the game, especially because it appears that the smoke effect is only eliminated for the player shown in the clip. This problem with smoke is not the first issue that has been discovered by users, with another recent bug showing players are able to use Battlefield 2042's grapple gun on smoke and tornados. The original Reddit post has over 8,900 upvotes on the Battlefield 2042 subreddit at the time of writing, with many users concerned with the overall quality of the game, as well as how easily the player was able to execute the glitch amidst a gunfight.
While glitches are difficult to eliminate completely, the easy replicability of this bug and its clear detrimental effect on other players is concerning. Having such an easy exploit available in-game may lead to players changing how they play in order to take advantage, therefore skewing the balance of matches. EA is already working on another identified potentially game-breaking Battlefield 2042 issue with hit registration that it doesn’t yet have a solution for, and it's likely the smoke grenade menu exploits will also be high up on EA DICE's priority list. Hopefully, EA will be able to address this problem quickly, with an upcoming patch due in December.
