DICE is adding a real scoreboard to Battlefield 2042, bringing the highly requested feature months after the game's release. Battlefield 2042 suffered from a rough launch, including game-breaking bugs, missing features, and a lackluster experience overall. Though DICE has promised a series of updates to address the plethora of issues plaguing its latest FPS, the game left a sour taste in many fans’ mouths. Just two weeks after its November release date, Battlefield 2042 lost 70% of its player base on Steam, and by mid-January, the game’s active player count consistently dipped below that of Battlefield 1 and the similarly maligned Battlefield 5.

The overall negative user experience in Battlefield 2042 has caused many to request refunds on Steam, and despite its 14-day refund policy, Steam is granting them. Usually, gamers are limited to a fourteen-day window to request a refund, but it seems the game’s many problems have caused Steam to alter its policy. More than its bugs, Battlefield 2042 also suffers from missing features that leave much to be desired. From a small selection of guns to core Battlefield features being absent altogether, the experience has been justly denounced. A particular sticking point has been the missing scoreboard, and fans have been requesting that DICE add to the minimal scoring features – with one fan having even designed their own UI improvements for Battlefield 2042.

According to Battlefield Direct Communication on Twitter (via Polygon), Battlefield 2042 is getting a real scoreboard in Update 3.3, which is said to launch sometime in mid-to-late February. The refreshed scoreboard will showcase the scores of the servers’ top players. The new scoreboard will also display squadmates’ scores and the scores of nearby players. The refreshed board will also display other useful information like kills, assists, revives, captures, and defenses, which will vary depending on the game mode. In the first look provided by Battlefield Direct Communication’s Twitter account – which is a work in progress scoreboard for a large conquest match – the real scoreboard also includes ribbon progression and other player info. The scoreboard will receive further improvements in later updates, though what future iterations will be included has not been confirmed.

Some believe there is still hope for Battlefield 2042 in DICE’s planned fixes, as well as with EA’s more positive direction for the game’s future. Though there is clearly a lot of work to be done, the introduction of an expanded Battlefield universe and consistent patches from DICE can steer the game and the franchise as a whole in the right direction. On January 20, DICE released a scheduled patch that delivered small fixes and improvements to the game’s overall performance. DICE also revealed plans for patches after February’s Update 3.3, including ones that improve the new scoreboard, add matchmaking preferences, and provide changes to XP in Portal. DICE has promised to continue working on Battlefield 2042’s overall performance.

The refreshed Battlefield 2042 scoreboard is a worthwhile improvement to the game considering the many fans that have requested it. Though Battlefield 2042 has bigger problems, the new scoreboard shows that DICE is listening to fans, despite having stood firm against adding a proper scoreboard.
