New details about Battlefield 2042's Hourglass map and climate environmental hazards were revealed at the Xbox Games Showcase Extended. The massive first-person shooter franchise spawned from the original release back in 2002, familiarly titled Battlefield 1942. The series is best known for its large-scale warfare, pitting a relatively high number of players against each other, making the series stand out among even its most popular competitors, like Call of Duty.

Battlefield 2042 was first announced on June 9 with a release trailer accompanying the announcement, showing off several of the game's environments and features through pre-rendered footage along with the inclusion of weather conditions and diverse battlegrounds for players to experience. More details for the game were revealed in the gameplay trailer shown in the Xbox & Bethesda Showcase on the first day of E3 2021, giving the world a first look at the multiplayer chaos from a player's perspective. Now, in a new trailer presented Thursday, the game's developers have shed more light on these game-changing features coming to the new title.

Showing new gameplay at Thursday's Xbox Games Showcase Extended, DICE design director Daniel Berlin highlighted Battlefield 2042's All-Out Warfare game types Conquest and Breakthrough and took a deep dive into Hourglass, as well as the destructive power of its tornado and sandstorm. Of three distinct gameplay modes, All-Out Warfare modes is apparently dedicated to "classic Battlefield experiences" wherein large combined-arms battles over take place on large maps, which now support 128 players in Battlefield 2042. Berlin honed in on Hourglass, a desert map with skyscrapers, a fully destructible village, and a stadium. Hourglass also houses weather hazards that change the map, including a massive wall of sand and a violent tornado that throws players and vehicles across the map.

Another detail shown off in the new footage for the game is the wingsuit, a device that allows players more speed and freedom of movement than parachutes, giving more options when dropping into the action whether it be jumping off the roof of a skyscraper or diving out of moving helicopters. With Battlefield 2042's release date set for October 22, only four months away from its latest showing, there's not a lot of time for further surprises and announcements. While the game was displayed in both of Xbox's recent showcases, fans were disappointed to not hear anything about it launching on Xbox Game Pass.

The latest entry in this long-running series looks promising, utilizing the graphics and processing power from the new console and PC hardware to create a unique and chaotic PvP experience. If the game can pull off its new weather systems and expanded player count without any noticeable bugs or glitches plaguing the new multiplayer environment at launch, Battlefield 2042 could be one of the best-received entries in some time. With the mixed reception of Battlefield V hanging over its head, DICE has a lot to prove when Battlefield 2042 arrives.
