Battlefield 2042 brings the franchise to a near-future Earth in the midst of war, and will add an impressive amount of customization. From multiple game modes to mid-battle weapon customization, players will have more freedom than ever before in how they choose to play the game. A battle pass featuring cosmetic-only rewards and a revamp to the class system are also on their way with the upcoming Battlefield installment.

Although Battlefield 2042 will not have a campaign, players are left with no shortage of content to play throughThree different game modes will make an appearance upon release: All-Out Warfare, Battlefield Portal, and Battlefield Hazard Zone. The first mode is the one longtime fans of the FPS franchise will most recognize, with two teams competing in an all-out war across the map, in either Conquest or Breakthrough. The player count in a given match will depend on players' console generation, with current-gen consoles supporting 128 players. Battlefield Hazard Zone, while still largely under wraps, has been confirmed to be a squad-based multiplayer experience.

The most unique game mode arriving with DICE's latest entry is Battlefield Portal. Featuring maps, armies, and vehicles from many of the previous games, this upcoming mode features levels of game customization unprecedented in the Battlefield franchise. This mode features a sandbox experience where players can make their own customized matches, as well as share with the community. According to EA, players will "be able to change team ratios, tweak victory conditions, restrict weapons, and even put different factions from different eras in Battlefield’s history against one another."

Battlefield 2042 Will Have A Lot Of Customization Options

Aside from the various game modes, player customization has been increased, both inside and outside of matches. Within a given match, players have access to the new Weapon Plus customization system, which allows changing of weapon attachments mid-battle. Instead of pulling up a full menu screen, as was done in previous Battlefield games, players can now simply open a holographic menu. True to the name, it takes the shape of a plus symbol, and will hover next to the currently equipped weapon. From there, weapon attachments can be changed in real time.

Outside of the gameplay itself is the additions to player customization. The class system of DICE's previous installments has been revamped for Battlefield 2042, which will instead feature 10 unique specialists. Each specialist will gravitate toward one of the previous 4 classes in terms of their unique gadgets and traits, but weapons and equipment can be swapped out at the player's discretion. This change will give players the option to pick a specialist based off of their abilities, rather than what loadouts are available.

Battlefield 2042 will also host a cosmetic-only Battle Pass, which is sure to come with a variety of rewards. Weapon charms, player cards, and specialist skins can all be expected to make an appearance in the battle pass, as they show up in the pre-order editions of the game. DICE has made it clear that it has no plans for pay-to-win microtransactions, which is likely to come as a comfort to many fans. There is sure to be more exciting customization on the way, as the official game launch is not until October 22. Players can explore all Battlefield 2042 has to offer with the open beta arriving in September.
