Warning! This post contains SPOILERS for Batman #128

In the latest issue of Batman, the Dark Knight has officially become the DC version of the MCU's Iron Man, causing Gotham's very own Age of Ultron. Due to Batman's most complex contingency plan being inadvertently activated in a desire to protect the world from every eventuality, the city he's sworn to protect is now in great danger from Failsafe, a deadly AI robot created by Batman to kill him should he ever go rogue. However, Failsafe is much harder to kill than one would think, resulting in Batman having quite a bit in common with Tony Stark who wished to build "a suit of armor around the world" with his Ultron program.

In recent issues from Chip Zdarsky and Jorge Jimenez, Batman was blamed for the death of the Penguin. While innocent, the Dark Knight chose to let his city believe the lie to make the city's criminals fear him even more. However, this inadvertently activated Failsafe, a highly advanced and lethal AI robot created by Batman's alternate personality Zur-En-Arrh who then removed the memories of its construction from his mind, ensuring that the Dark Knight couldn't prepare for the robot with directives to end the Dark Knight if he ever crossed the line.

Now, the new Batman #128 sees Failsafe having beaten Batman to a bloody pulp with the rest of the Bat-Family and even the Justice League having no better luck defeating the bat-themed version of Iron Man's Ultron in the MCU. While Batman was forced to retreat and recover from his wounds under the sea in Atlantis, the Dark Knight was woken up by Aquaman who confirms how bad things have become in the days following the initial confrontation. Still searching the globe for the Dark Knight, Failsafe has completely taken over Gotham City in Batman's absence.

Batman Has Created His Own Version Of Marvel's Age of Ultron

Failsafe Takes Over Gotham in Batman #128

With Failsafe creating drones of itself to monitor Gotham and heroes sneaking in the shadows to avoid becoming prisoners of the powerful robot, it's not hard to see the parallels to the Age of Ultron storyline in the comics as well as Ultron's mission to end humanity in the MCU. Likewise, Batman's ego and hubris are similarly to blame for Failsafe just like Iron Man and his creation of Ultron. Although Batman had intentionally forgotten about creating his own killer robot, Failsafe symbolizes his paranoia and obsessive need to have a plan for every outcome, even one where he crosses the line he's sworn to never cross. Rather than trusting that his family and allies would rally to stop and hopefully redeem him, he instead built a killer robot he can't anticipate or plan for which is now endangering said family and allies (and the entirety of Gotham).

At any rate, the comparisons to Iron Man have become stronger than ever before now that Batman has his own Ultron. Apparently if you're a rich billionaire superhero, building an AI robot that becomes a colossal and deadly failure is just an inevitability. Batman #128 is on sale now.
