Batman has reminded comic book readers why he's the world's greatest detective. Peter J. Tomasi's Detective Comics run has seen the Cult of Two-Face bring Gotham City to its knees. Harvey Dent has reinvented himself as leader of an insane cult of supposed "justice," and it will take all Batman's ingenuity to defeat them.

Detective Comics #1021 sees Two-Face's plans escalate. He believes his cultists should protect Gotham by acting as brutal vigilantes; while the Dark Knight is occupied with Harvey Dent himself, his men successfully capture all Gotham's prime movers and shakers, from Penguin to Catwoman. Fortunately, the same issue serves as a crucial reminder why Batman is not to be underestimated.

Two-Face's new modus operandii has taken the Dark Knight by surprise, and he's currently on the back foot. He successfully captured a group of cultists, but was unaware Two-Face had installed brain-bombs - a trick he'd presumably borrowed from Amanda Waller's Suicide Squad. But Batman still reacts with admirable speed, obtaining genetic samples from the corpses and swiftly identifying them. Although all Two-Face's cultists have criminal records, Batman correctly deduces they wouldn't be willing to kill themselves unless they were dying already; moments later computer analysis of the criminals' blood identifies traces of cancer. In truth, the computer was simply confirming what Batman had already deduced.

Batman Detective

Batman now knows the identity of several Two-Face cultists, and he takes the next logical step; attempting to trace their movements, and find any common locations. Fortunately, his detective abilities are reinforced by some of the most sophisticated technology, and his computer system has already hacked into Gotham City's CCTV network. Facial recognition software allows him to learn all the known cultists have crossed paths eleven times at the Gotham courthouse, and by the end of the issue Batman has discovered a network of caverns beneath the courthouse, now being used by the Cult of Two-Face.

This is why Batman is rightly considered the World's Greatest Detective in DC Comics. He has a phenomenal intelligence and a logical mind, allowing him to piece together myriad clues and use them to counter his enemies' strategies. Furthermore, his deductive abilities are supported by some of the best resources imaginable, not to mention a complete disregard for privacy laws. Ironically, though, as great a detective as he may be, Batman is actually being outsmarted. DC's solicits have suggested Two-Face is just a pawn in a greater game, a puppet being used by the Joker as part of his own twisted plans. No doubt the Clown Prince of Crime will be delighted at the fact Batman is none the wiser about this.
